  • Mental Health Risks in Cancer Survivors Persist Long-Term

Mental Health Risks in Cancer Survivors Persist Long-Term Mental Health Risks in Cancer Survivors Persist Long-Term Content Editor: Dr. Dr Ghurumourthy October 18, 2024 eClinicalMedicine Mental Health, Cancer Survivor A recent study published in eClinicalMedicine reveals that cancer survivors face elevated risks of mental health issues, including depression, anxiety, non-fatal self-harm, and suicide, compared to cancer-free individuals. Researchers conducted a cohort study using UK electronic health records from over 853,000 cancer survivors and 8.1 million cancer-free individuals. The study focused on survivors of the 20 most common cancers and examined mental health outcomes over short, medium, and long-term follow-up. The methodology involved matching cancer survivors with cancer-free individuals based on age, sex, and general practice, and analyzing their risks for new mental health episodes using Cox regression models. The results showed that survivors of cancers with poorer survival rates, such as lung and pancreatic cancers, experienced significantly higher risks of depression, anxiety, and self-harm. These risks were highest within the first year after diagnosis but persisted for more than five years for many cancer types. The study concludes that cancer survivors need enhanced psychological support, especially those with poorer prognosis cancers. The findings highlight the importance of addressing the long-term mental health impacts of cancer survivorship. Click here to read more

WHO says, JN.1 a Variant of Interest (VOI) WHO says, JN.1 a Variant of Interest (VOI) Content Editor: Dr. Sangya Chaudhary December 25, 2023 World Health Organization COVID 19, International Health The W orld H ealth O rganization (WHO ) has designated the COVID-19 variant JN.1 as a separate variant of interest due to its rapid spread, distinct from the parent lineage BA.2.86. The global public health risk associated with JN.1 is currently considered low, but as winter approaches in the Northern Hemisphere, it could contribute to an increased burden of respiratory infections. Despite this, current vaccines remain effective against severe disease and death caused by JN.1 and other SARS-CoV-2 variants. The WHO emphasizes the importance of preventive measures , including wearing masks, improving ventilation, practising respiratory etiquette, regular hand hygiene, vaccination against COVID-19 and influenza, staying home when sick, and getting tested for symptoms or exposure. Health workers are advised to use universal masking in health facilities and appropriate personal protective equipment when caring for COVID-19 patients. The WHO will continue to monitor and update risk evaluations as needed. Currently, some countries with the largest number of cases of the JN.1 variant are France, USA, Singapore, Canada and UK.

  • Is there any association between stroke and climate change? | PH Chronicle

Is there any association between stroke and climate change? Content Editor: Dr. Urmimala April 13, 2024 at 2:00:00 PM Research findings, Climate Change, Neuroepidemiology Data from the World Bank climate database “Climatic Research Unit Gridded Time Series” and the “Global Burden of Disease Study” were analyzed to estimate the burden of stroke globally and its association with different climate conditions. The study found that more than 5 lakh deaths and 9 million DALYs (Disability Adjusted Life Years) due to stroke were attributable to non-optimal temperature exposure. The age-standardized mortality rate was found to be higher in men (ASMR -7.70) compared to women (ASMR - 5.89). Central Asia has the highest-burden at a regional level. The stroke burden due to low temperatures was more prevalent than high temperatures , but the burden of higher temperatures has increased over the years with disproportionate effects on the lower socio-demographic index areas of Africa, and Central Asia. The study draws attention to the impact of climate change on stroke and the need for policy actions towards it. Previous Next
