Second human case of Avian Influenza detected in Michigan: Raises concerns of zoonotic transmission Content Editor: Dr. Manjeet June 5, 2024 at 12:30:00 PM Disease Outbreaks While a nasal swab tested negative for influenza, an eye swab in a dairy farm worker tested positive for influenza A (H5) virus, indicating an eye infection. Similar to the prior case in Texas, the affected individual, a dairy farm worker, exhibited symptoms solely in the eye, signaling a potential transmission route. This case underscores the importance of precautions for individuals exposed to infected animals. The CDC recommends avoiding close or prolonged exposure to sick or dead animals and their excreta. The CDC website provides interim recommendations for the prevention, monitoring, and public health investigations of A(H5N1) virus infections. Efforts to sequence the virus in the clinical specimen are underway, with results expected within 1-2 days. The CDC continues to engage with state and local health departments to enhance preparedness and response efforts, including updating worker protection and monitoring recommendations. More information is available on the CDC's website. Despite the low general public risk, heightened precautions are urged, emphasizing the importance of stringent preventive measures in the face of zoonotic threats. Click here to read more . - Diabetes Trend around the world from 1990-2022 | PH Chronicle
Diabetes Trend around the world from 1990-2022 Content Editor: Dr. Shubham November 26, 2024 at 3:32:05 PM Diabetes, Global Burden of Disease India has the highest number of adults living with untreated diabetes, with over 212 million affected in 2022 and 62% still remain untreated with similar statistics in low- and middle-income countries that see rising diabetes rates but stagnant treatment coverage. This study aimed to analyse global trends in both diabetes prevalence and treatment coverage in representative populations across countries The prevalence of diabetes in India nearly doubled from 11.9% in women and 11.3% in men in 1990 to 24% and 21.4%, respectively, in 2022. This untreated diabetes epidemic poses severe public health risks, including complications like heart disease, kidney damage, and vision loss. The study recommends expanding health insurance and primary health care to enhance early detection and effective treatment of diabetes to mitigate the growing burden of non-communicable diseases in India. The National Family Health Survey (NFHS) also highlights that 40% of Indian women and 12% of men suffer from abdominal obesity, a significant risk factor for diabetes. Addressing these intertwined health issues requires urgent public health interventions focusing on early detection, continuous care, and lifestyle modifications to mitigate the growing burden of non-communicable diseases in India. Iowa resident dies from suspected Lassa Fever after West Africa trip PHC Editor November 16, 2024 at 2:16:04 PM Lassa fever, CDC, Viral hemorrhagic fever. An Iowa resident has died from a suspected case of Lassa fever after returning from West Africa earlier this month. The individual was hospitalized in isolation at the University of Iowa Health Care Medical Center and passed away shortly after admission. Preliminary tests conducted by the Nebraska Laboratory Response Network indicated a presumptive positive result for Lassa fever; confirmatory testing is underway. Lassa fever, endemic to West Africa , is transmitted to humans through contact with urine or droppings of infected rodents and, in rare cases, through person-to-person contact via bodily fluids. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) assesses the risk to the general public as extremely low, noting that the patient was not symptomatic during travel, minimizing the risk to fellow passengers. - Mental Health Risks in Cancer Survivors Persist Long-Term
Mental Health Risks in Cancer Survivors Persist Long-Term Mental Health Risks in Cancer Survivors Persist Long-Term Content Editor: Dr. Dr Ghurumourthy October 18, 2024 eClinicalMedicine Mental Health, Cancer Survivor A recent study published in eClinicalMedicine reveals that cancer survivors face elevated risks of mental health issues, including depression, anxiety, non-fatal self-harm, and suicide, compared to cancer-free individuals. Researchers conducted a cohort study using UK electronic health records from over 853,000 cancer survivors and 8.1 million cancer-free individuals. The study focused on survivors of the 20 most common cancers and examined mental health outcomes over short, medium, and long-term follow-up. The methodology involved matching cancer survivors with cancer-free individuals based on age, sex, and general practice, and analyzing their risks for new mental health episodes using Cox regression models. The results showed that survivors of cancers with poorer survival rates, such as lung and pancreatic cancers, experienced significantly higher risks of depression, anxiety, and self-harm. These risks were highest within the first year after diagnosis but persisted for more than five years for many cancer types. The study concludes that cancer survivors need enhanced psychological support, especially those with poorer prognosis cancers. The findings highlight the importance of addressing the long-term mental health impacts of cancer survivorship. Click here to read more
