Strong Social Ties Promote Longevity and Better Health Outcomes Content Editor: Dr. Sampriti July 11, 2025 at 5:03:46 PM International Health News A recent report from a WHO Commission emphasizes the importance of strong social ties for maintaining good health , warning that loneliness and social isolation are significant global health threats. It is estimated that loneliness contributes to 871,000 additional deaths each year across 100 countries, with risks akin to smoking 15 cigarettes daily . Social isolation increases the likelihood of heart disease, stroke, dementia, anxiety, and depression. The Commission urges immediate, multi-sectoral efforts, such as enhancing community infrastructure, formulating supportive policies and incorporating social connection into healthcare systems. The report from the WHO Commission on Social Connection presents a worldwide action plan that concentrates on five main areas: policy, research, interventions, improved measurement (including the creation of a global Social Connection Index) and public engagement . The aim is to transform social norms and strengthen a global movement for social connection . Additionally, WHO introduced the “Knot Alone” campaign and passed its first World Health Assembly resolution on social connection in June 2025, urging nations to prioritize this issue. Tackling social isolation is crucial for enhancing population health and reducing premature mortality worldwide. Previous Next

Emphasizing the health disparities in the Small Island Developing States. Content Editor: Dr. Urmimala Maiti June 24, 2023 at 6:17:00 PM Global health, Non-Communicable Diseases, Mental health, SIDS, Obesity The Small Island Developing States (SIDS) are a group of countries with distinct social, economic, health, nutrition, and climate change vulnerabilities. They are primarily dependent on external sources like tourism for the economy. Have the highest prevalence of adult and childhood obesity in the world. >1/2 of the deaths are premature due to NCDs and mental illnesses. Classification as middle- and high-income countries prevents access to financing from global organizations leading to further challenges. The 2023 "Bridgetown Declaration on Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) and Mental Health " aims to Reduce premature NCD-related mortalities by 1/3rd using prevention and control strategies under the action principle of Engage, accelerate, invest, align, account . • Why is there a need for an extra dose of polio vaccine?

With COVID-19 disrupting the ongoing vaccination programs and AFP (Acute Flaccid Paralysis) surveillance there is a concern about polio cases being unreported. This necessitated the need for an extra dose of IPV to sustain the population's immunity level against Poliovirus. Public Health News Analysis Why is there a need for an extra dose of polio vaccine? Author : Dr. Urmimala Maiti Updated on : May 2, 2023 Immunization, inactivated polio vaccine, Polio vaccine coverage From 1st Jan 2023, the fIPV-3rd dose has been introduced by MOHFW, India. With COVID-19 disrupting the ongoing vaccination programs and AFP (Acute Flaccid Paralysis) surveillance there is a concern about polio cases being unreported. This necessitated the need for an extra dose of IPV to sustain the population's immunity level against Poliovirus. Polio vaccination schedule under the Universal Immunization program: Birth: OPV Zero 6 weeks: OPV-1 10 weeks: OPV-2 14 weeks: OPV-3 16-24 months: OPV Booster dose. 6 weeks: fIPV-1 14 weeks: fIPV-2 dose. From 1st Jan 2023, the fIPV-3 dose has been introduced. At 9 months 0.1 ml ID in the Left upper arm. Milestones in polio eradication so far in India OPV as a tool to eliminate Polio came to India in 1967; Trivalent OPV in 1970. Starting in 1995, the Pulse Polio Immunization program was conducted at least once every year across India. IPV was introduced in November 2015 as an additional dose along with 3rd dose of the pentavalent vaccine as a part of the Polio endgame strategy and tOPV-bOPV switch . Fractional dose of IPV became a part of routine immunization in 2017. Last cases of Polio reported in India Wild poliovirus type 2: 24 October 1999 in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh Wild poliovirus type 3: 2 October 2010 in Pakur, Jharkhand Wild poliovirus type 1: 13 January 2011 in Howrah, West Bengal WHO certified India as Polio free on 27 March 2014. Current global scenario Wild poliovirus (WPV) Type 1: Causing 100% of current cases Type 2: Eradicated in 2015 Type 3: Eradicated in 2019 WPV type1 cases in Pakistan and Afghanistan till 2022. cVDPV − types 1, 2, and 3, with type 2 currently causing the vast majority of cases. 33 countries across the world, such as the U.K., the U.S., Israel, and Malawi have experienced outbreaks of vaccine-derived poliovirus . In live attenuated OPV, the virus multiplies in the intestine for several weeks and is excreted via stool, interrupting transmission of wild poliovirus by ensuring passive immunity (passage of vaccine-derived virus) to unvaccinated children in areas of poor sanitation. provides mucosal immunity along with an eliciting systemic immune response. IPV consists of inactivated (killed) poliovirus strains of all three poliovirus types. IPV cannot interrupt the transmission of WPV. It also provides a low level of immunity. Hence, OPV is still the vaccine of choice for containing outbreaks and eradicating polio. However, in areas with low immunization coverage, VDPV can mutate into the paralytic form of poliovirus. The risk of developing paralytic polio due to continued use of OPV is deemed to pose a greater risk than imported WPV. With COVID-19 disrupting the ongoing vaccination programs and AFP (Acute Flaccid Paralysis) surveillance there is a concern about polio cases being unreported. This necessitated the need for an extra dose of IPV to sustain the population's immunity level against Poliovirus and make our dream of eradicating Polio come true in the near future. The hurdles High-Risk Groups who are the focus of the Pulse Polio Programme Brick Kiln and Construction Workers Nomads Temporary and permanent slum dwellers Underserved communities. Conclusion Immunization should be an integral part of primary health care where universal health care must be provided. Government cannot expect the people in the community to accept what is provided unless they receive what they need and deserve. The benefit of vaccination is both delayed and invisible to the community - hence the critical need for effective health education . High-quality clinical surveillance for acute flaccid paralysis (AFP) as well as virological surveillance is the pressing need of the hour for polio. Combating India's hospital-acquired infections-driven AMR: A policy perspective Combating India's hospital-acquired infections-driven AMR: A policy perspective Content Editor: Dr. Prachi July 9, 2024 Indian Journal of Medical Research Antimicrobial resistance The study noted that currently, India faces a severe antimicrobial resistance (AMR) burden, particularly in healthcare-acquired infections (HAIs). HAI rates and carbapenem resistance in Indian hospitals far exceed those in the US. Parallely, factors contributing to AMR in Indian HAIs are poorly understood. Recent studies show that hospital environments are major sources of resistant pathogens. Critical gaps identified were a lack of nationwide HAI data and limited research on India-specific interventions. The study recommends the following measures to tackle this: 1. Creating international partnerships to fund research training programs 2. Creating an interdisciplinary hospital epidemiology research program However, the biggest challenge to addressing AMR includes balancing the urgent need for action with the time required for research and training. Pledging for a “drug-free India” Content Editor: Dr. Urmimala August 30, 2024 at 1:30:00 PM Substance Abuse, Illegal drug trafficking Two men were held in Maharashtra for the illicit trafficking of 900 psychotropic drug pills- one of the many cases being dealt with under the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act 1985. As India lies at the wedge between the Golden Crescent and Golden Triangle of illegal opioid production, it is a common route for the transport and trade of psychotropic drugs. According to the World Drug Report 2021, Amphetamine-type stimulants, Cannabis-type drugs, hallucinogens, opioids, both opiates and pharmaceutical opioids, and sedatives, among others, are the most commonly seizure drugs from India. These substances have been linked to Substance Use Disorders that are chronic and relapsing. At the inauguration of a zonal unit of the Narcotic Control Bureau in Chhattisgarh today, the Union Minister spoke about preventing substance abuse by giving foremost priority to preventing its illegal trade, strengthening the legal network of detection, and taking appropriate measures to punish those involved. US FDA grants priority review for adult pneumococcal conjugate vaccine Content Editor: Dr. Prachi Goswami January 9, 2024 at 1:30:00 PM Vaccination The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted Merck Research Laboratories, a priority review of its application for approval of an investigational pneumococcal conjugate vaccine for adults. Merck's 21-valent (21-strain) pneumococcal conjugate vaccine, V116, is designed to help prevent pneumococcal disease and pneumococcal pneumonia in adults, including serotypes that are responsible for 83% of invasive pneumococcal disease in people 65 years of age and older. It has eight unique Streptococcus pneumoniae serotypes not covered in currently licensed pneumococcal vaccines. The License Application is based on the results of multiple phase 3 trials that evaluated V116 in both vaccine-naïve and vaccine-experienced adults. In the STRIDE-3 trial, V116 elicited non-inferior immune responses to PCV20 (pneumococcal 20-valent conjugate vaccine) for all 10 serotypes covered by both vaccines and superior immune responses for 10 of 11 serotypes included in V116 but not covered by PCV20. The FDA has set a target action date of June 17, 2024. Previous Next
