AroTrack: For detection of pollutants in water Content Editor: Dr. Swathi November 26, 2024 at 3:32:07 PM Pollution, Innovation, Environment The mechanism of action involves the device identifying the compounds by utilizing the proteins present in bacteria residing in heavily polluted water. The presence of an aromatic compound like phenol or benzene causes the protein to hydrolyze when mixed with water, leading to a change in color, which is identified by the device. MopR , an engineered molecule from the Acinetobacter bacteria , is responsible for detecting phenol. This molecule has been re-engineered to aid in the identification of other aromatic compounds. The device has an overall cost of $50 and is cost-effective due to its reusability . Currently, the initial functional prototype is ready , and further quality analysis is being conducted to make it market-ready. Previous Next

  • RCSI study uses AI to uncover extensive health risks in vape flavors | PH Chronicle

RCSI study uses AI to uncover extensive health risks in vape flavors Content Editor: Dr. Chinmay May 20, 2024 at 1:30:00 PM Vaping, AI Study, International Health News The study was conducted at the RCSI University of Medicine and Health Sciences in Dublin. Vaping works by heating a mixture of flavors, propylene glycol, vegetable glycerin, and nicotine into an aerosol to inhale. Heating this mixture, especially fruit flavors, produces harmful chemicals linked to various health issues. AI was used to analyze 180 flavors, predicting 127 acutely toxic chemicals, 153 health hazards, and 225 irritants. They computed six relevant molecular properties and used principal components to represent the chemical space. The goal was to predict potential pyrolysis products by using the software PUMA 1.0 . The study indicates nearly all vape flavors may pose health hazards, even those without nicotine. However, the vaping industry contends vaping is far less harmful than smoking and is key to helping smokers quit. The UK government is taking steps by banning disposable vapes and limiting sweet flavors . Public health officials advise avoiding vaping if you don't smoke , and vaping should only be used to quit smoking . Click here to read more. Previous Next

  • Safety analysis of Covaxin: Findings from an observational study

Safety analysis of Covaxin: Findings from an observational study Safety analysis of Covaxin: Findings from an observational study Content Editor: Dr. Sakshi Aggarwal May 20, 2024 Springer Link Side Effects, Vaccination, COVID-19 A prospective observational study interviewed 1024 individuals telephonically regarding long-term adverse events of special interest (AESIs) following a year of vaccination among adolescents and adults who received the BBV152 vaccine (Covaxin). The study determined the risk factors for AESIs and AESIs that lasted for a minimum of one month. The most common AESIs among adolescents were as follows: Viral upper respiratory tract infections (47.9%) New-onset skin and subcutaneous disorders (10.5%) Nervous system disorders (4.7%) Similarly, the most common AESIs among the adults were as follows: Viral upper respiratory tract infections (42.6%) Musculoskeletal disorders (5.8%) Nervous system disorders (5.5%) A few other AESIs were also noted, such as Guillain–Barre syndrome, menstrual abnormalities, and ocular abnormalities. The development patterns of AESIs following BBV152 were not the same as those observed with other COVID-19 vaccines against COVID-19, nor were they consistent between adolescents and adults. Further comparative studies would be required to understand the association of Covaxin with the AESIs. Click here to read more.

Neuroanatomical insights into acquired and developmental stuttering: Findings from a study Content Editor: Dr. Manu June 6, 2024 at 2:00:00 PM Neurology, Stuttering, Literature Analysis, and Lesion Network Mapping An international team of researchers from New Zealand, Finland, Canada, and the USA conducted a study to assess the neuroanatomical cause of acquired stuttering and find a common cause for developmental stuttering . Following were their findings - Published case reports (n = 20) and a clinical single study cohort with acquired neurogenic stuttering following stroke (n = 3, 20 cases, and 17 controls) were analyzed to find a neurological lesion network responsible for this. This was then analyzed with a cohort of adults with persistent developmental stuttering (n=20) to find if this lesion-based network was relevant to developmental causes. The results showed the lesions were functionally connected to a common network centered around the left putamen, amygdalostriatal transitional area, and claustrum . The researchers noted that the last two areas are new regions discovered to have an effect and can be further analyzed to confirm their effect. This can lead to a new direction in diagnosing and treating these disorders. Click her https://academic.oup.com/brain/advance-article/doi/10.1093/brain/awae059/7667029 e to read more. Previous Next
