- No progress in reducing maternal and neonatal deaths since the last 8 years: UN report | PH Chronicle
No progress in reducing maternal and neonatal deaths since the last 8 years: UN report Content Editor: Dr. Anubhav Mondal May 11, 2023 at 4:36:53 PM Maternal and child health, International health According to the report, more than 4.5 million women and kids perish each year during pregnancy, childbirth, or the first few weeks following delivery. Worldwide, the death rates of expectant mothers and babies remain intolerably high, and the COVID-19 pandemic has made it harder to get them the healthcare they require. In the report, "Improving maternal and newborn health and survival and reducing stillbirth," the most recent statistics regarding these deaths are evaluated. The analysis demonstrates that since 2015, improvements in survival have stalled, with 290 000 maternal deaths annually, 1.9 million stillbirths, and 2.3 million newborn fatalities. More than 75% of all nations affected by armed conflict and Sub-Saharan Africa report decreasing funding for maternal and neonatal health since 2018. Less than 60% of pregnant women obtain even four of the eight antenatal visits that the WHO recommends in the worst-affected nations in Sub-Saharan Africa and Central and Southern Asia. More than 60 nations are not expected to achieve the reduction objectives for maternal, neonatal, and stillbirth mortality under the UN Sustainable Development Goals by 2030 based on current trends. 03. Diabetes remission through intermittent, calorie-restricted diet - Study findings December 25, 2022 at 8:52:37 AM Clinical research findings A small randomised, control trial with intermittent calorie-restricted diet carried out in people with type-2 diabetes was able to achieve remission in nearly 50% of the participants in the intervention group at the end of three months of follow-up after the trial. The trial lasted for three months. Even at 12 months of follow-up, remission was seen in 44% of the participants. All participants who achieved remission had completely stopped taking any drug to control blood sugar, and the remission lasted at least one year. Even with the more stringent criteria for complete remission, which describes a return to normal measures of glucose metabolism (HbA1c in the normal range, and fasting blood glucose of 100 mg/dL) of at least one year duration in the absence of any anti-diabetic drugs, 33.3% (12/36) of participants in the intervention group achieved complete remission. Menstrual Health Study Highlights Stigma Among Youth in Tamil Nadu Content Editor: Dr. Manu Goel July 11, 2025 at 5:03:46 PM Menstruation, Women And Child Health, Adolescent Health American Institutes for Research (AIR) and Sanitation First , two non-profit organisations, had collaborated to conduct a baseline-level survey in the Tiruvallur district of Tamil Nadu exploring the stigma surrounding menstruation and the barriers girls face towards meeting their needs. The following are the findings - 43% of boys believed that girls shouldn’t enter the kitchen while 58% believed they shouldn’t enter religious places during menstruation. 77% of girls shared this belief . 70% of boys and 30% of girls believed that menstruation was disabling for girls . This reflected an undercurrent of stigma towards menstruation. 15% of girls had missed school due to heavy and painful menstrual bleeding. This showed the significant burden of an oft-ignored issue. Meanwhile, 95% of teachers and school leaders believed that mothers should be the primary source of information about menstruation for girls. A majority of girls also followed unsafe practices related to the disposal of sanitary products . 72% of women burnt the sanitary products while 3% of them buried it. Following the findings of this study, Sanitation First plans to conduct the ‘Happy Period s' training programme across 62 schools in the district. These will be compared with other groups acting as a control in the district. An endline survey will then be conducted to assess the impact of this project. Happy Periods is a program conducted independently in Tamil Nadu to create awareness among adolescents and teachers regarding menstruation.Click here to read more Previous Next

Systematic review uncovers real-world effectiveness of MVA-BN vaccine in outbreak settings Content Editor: Dr. Gurumurthy May 13, 2024 at 12:30:00 PM Vaccine, Monkey Pox, Outbreak Mpox, predominantly found in Central and West Africa, has recently led to significant outbreaks in non-endemic areas , including a major outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The Modified Vaccinia Ankara-Bavarian Nordic (MVA-BN) vaccine , approved for mpox and smallpox, has been evaluated for its effectiveness through a systematic review of observational studies published from January 2022 to February 2024 . This review, which included 16 studies from high-income countries with varied designs and target populations, found that MVA-BN offers vaccine effectiveness (VE) against symptomatic mpox ranging from 35% to 86% after one dose and 66% to 90% after two doses in pre-exposure settings. For post-exposure prophylaxis, VE was observed at 78% and 89% for a single dose. Additionally, MVA-BN has been shown to reduce hospitalization risks and severity of symptoms, supporting its use in managing mpox outbreaks despite the studies' methodological diversity.
