FDA approves first medication for obstructive sleep apnea Content Editor: PHC Editorial Bureau December 26, 2024 at 8:04:12 PM FDA, Zepbound, Obstructive Sleep Apnea The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved Zepbound (tirzepatide) as the first medication for treating moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in adults with obesity . This marks a significant advancement in OSA management. In clinical trials, Zepbound demonstrated a substantial reduction in apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) scores, indicating fewer breathing interruptions during sleep. Participants also experienced significant weight loss, which is believed to contribute to the improvement in OSA symptoms.Following the approval, stocks of sleep apnea device manufacturers, such as ResMed and Inspire Medical Systems, saw declines. This suggests that Zepbound may offer an alternative to traditional positive airway pressure (PAP) therapies, which some patients find uncomfortable. Beyond improving sleep apnea, Zepbound has shown potential in reducing the progression of heart failure and kidney disease, highlighting its multifaceted health benefits. Previous Next

  • Targeted nutritional support to affected households can avert ~400,000 TB deaths by 2035 | PH Chronicle

Targeted nutritional support to affected households can avert ~400,000 TB deaths by 2035 Content Editor: Dr. KH Reddy January 31, 2025 at 3:17:39 PM Tuberculosis, Infectious disease modelling, Nutrition, Health economics A recent modelling study conducted by researchers from London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, London and Yenepoya Medical College, Mangalore; published in Lancet Global health, has evaluated the cost-effectiveness of nutritional support for TB households in conjunction with impact of the intervention on further transmission of TB . The study estimated that about 900,000 TB episodes and around 400,000 fatalities can be prevented if India can implement nutritional support for all household contacts of TB patients in at least 50% of families where people are undergoing treatment for tuberculosis from 2023 to 2035. These figures correspond to preventing 2·2% (2·1–2·4) of all TB cases and 4·6% (4·2–5·5) of all TB fatalities. This proposed intervention would cost the nation around Rs.15k per DALYs prevented . The study also estimated that on the contrary nutritional support to only the patient undergoing TB treatment can avert 46700 new cases and 234,300 TB fatalities . Click here to read more. MTBVAC- In the quest of TB vaccine trials in India Content Editor: Dr. Urmimala March 29, 2024 at 2:45:00 PM Vaccine, Tuberculosis, Communicable Disease Tuberculosis has claimed millions of lives since ancient times. Despite having effective treatment, the complexity of Mycobacterium tuberculosis has hindered progress towards disease control. Numerous tuberculosis vaccine candidates are in the pipeline of development. Prediction modeling studies have found that preventing the disease among adolescents and adults is one of the quickest means to achieve global tuberculosis control . Among those in the Phase III clinical trial, MTBVAC is the first live, genetically- attenuated vaccine developed by Biofabri , a Spanish biopharmaceutical company. Bharat Biotech in partnership with Biofabri is conducting an efficacy, immunogenicity, and safety trial in India aiming for: Prolonged effect in newborns compared to the BCG vaccine Prevention of disease among adolescents and adults. The vaccine is under trial in different countries on safety and immunogenicity in HIV-infected and non-infected populations. The limiting step is the cost of conducting trials on late-stage efficacy and the long post-vaccination follow-up. Following the successful trial, vaccines would be required to obtain WHO policy recommendations for roll-out, globally. C lick here to read more. Previous Next

Indian research: Navigating the right course or lost in the storm? Content Editor: Dr Sumana Mukhopadhyay October 20, 2023 at 12:30:00 PM Health Research, DALY A study conducted by IISc and Leiden University reveals a disconnect between India's health research publications and DALYs. Disability Adjusted Life Years (DALYs) serve as a measure of a population's health. The results of the study highlight the gross disparity, with certain diseases receiving more research attention than their actual burden. Diabetes mellitus, with a 3.1% DALY contribution, garnered 7.5% of the research focus. Neonatal conditions, with a 12.3% DALY share, received only 1.3% of research attention. Similarly, cancer and cardiovascular diseases, despite their significant contribution to India's disease burden, have received less attention from the research fraternity. Tuberculosis (TB) serves as a well-aligned example, with India dedicating research efforts proportionate to its 7% disease burden. Figures reveal India's research focuses on diseases with lower domestic impact but substantial global threats, such as malaria and HIV/AIDS. Global research priorities often cater to the demands of high-income countries, resulting in funding mismatches in the global south. Previous Next

  • Differences in preventable premature deaths: The urban and rural gap | PH Chronicle

Differences in preventable premature deaths: The urban and rural gap Content Editor: Dr. Soundhar May 14, 2024 at 12:30:00 PM International Health, Health Report, Urban and rural The percentage of preventable premature deaths from five leading causes of death was consistently higher in rural counties than in most urban counties during the study period. The gap between most rural and urban counties for premature death increased for four causes of death (cancer, heart disease, chronic lower respiratory disease, and stroke ). However, it decreased for unintentional injury during 2010-2022. Urban and suburban counties experienced an increase in unintentional injuries, leading to a narrow gap in the percentage of preventable premature deaths. The increase in premature death for multiple leading causes of death was observed in 2020 due to COVID-19-related conditions, which contributed to increased mortality from heart disease and stroke. Routine tracking based on urban-rural county classification might enable us to identify and monitor geographic disparities in health outcomes. Click here to read more. Previous Next
