Rabid seals attack surfers: South Africa faces unusual rabies outbreak Content Editor: Dr Sakshi Aggarwal July 18, 2024 at 3:00:00 PM Rabies outbreak, One Health, Zoonotic disease Rabies spreads to people from the saliva of infected animals and is usually transmitted through a bite. An incident was reported in Cape Town after a seal bit several surfers. Four fur seals were euthanized for testing; three tested positive. To date, 11 fur seals in South Africa have tested positive for rabies , marking the first significant marine mammal outbreak. The symptoms include fever, pain, and unusual sensations at the wound site, followed by brain and spinal cord inflammation, leading to hyperactivity, hallucinations, hydrophobia, and paralysis. Rabies is common in regional wildlife but rare in seals. There is a potential risk of seal-to-human transmission as well. About 2 million fur seals live in the area, raising concerns about the virus spreading within colonies and to other species like otters. The following public safety measures are being taken by officials to prevent potential spread : 1. Vaccination of the surfers and swimmers if bitten. 2. Closing of beaches by lifeguards if aggressive seals are seen. 3. Dog owners are urged keep pets leashed. Previous Next

  • Independent Review Supports Animal-to-Human SARS-CoV-2 Origin | PH Chronicle

Independent Review Supports Animal-to-Human SARS-CoV-2 Origin Dr. Amelia Rivers DNS, quantum security, encryption, internet safety On 27th June 2025, the “Scientific Advisory Group for the Origins of Novel Pathogens” (SAGO) published the “Independent assessment of the origins of SARS-CoV-2”. The 73rd World Health Assembly called for identifying the source of SARS-CoV-2 introduction in humans. SAGo and WHO did not have access to raw data for information, therefore, the report was prepared based on existing evidence, reports and scientific literature. Four hypothesis were considered. Natural zoonotic source as a spillover event to humans- direct transmission from wild animals, or through an intermediate host. Accidental exposure to laboratory source through field research or during laboratory biosafety procedures. - laboratory- related accidental event. Through cold chain process from sources in “animal markets. laboratory- related deliberate event. SAGO calls on all governments (especially those in regions where the initial human cases were detected) to share any relevant information, data, and findings from their investigations. Zoonotic origin of SARS-COV2 with spillover from animals to humans is currently considered the best supported hypothesis based on available scientific data. Until the requests for more information are met or detailed scientific data becomes available, the origins of the virus and how it entered the human population will remain inconclusive. The available scientific evidence currently supports a zoonotic origin with transmission from animals to humans as the most likely explanation. The true origins of SARS-CoV-2 and its pathway into the human population will remain uncertain until additional information is available. Previous Next

America's silent mental health crisis Content Editor: Dr. M Swathi Shenoy September 8, 2023 at 12:30:00 PM Mental Health, Non communicable diseases The CDC recently released a report on provisional estimates of suicide in the United States for the year 2022. The findings of the report are as follows: In 2022, an estimated 49,449 deaths were by suicide, an increase of 2.6% from 2021. Previously, in 2019 and 2020, the rates had decreased. However, since 2021, the rates of suicide have increased in the United States. However, in two ethnic groups, namely, American Indian and Alaska Native, the rates have decreased since the previous years. The CDC’s Comprehensive Suicide Prevention Program (CSP) is designed to implement and evaluate a comprehensive public health approach to suicide prevention, focusing on those disproportionately affected. The National Action Alliance for Suicide Prevention and the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline suggest five steps to help safeguard people from the risk of suicide and support them when in crisis: Ask for help Help keep them safe by reducing their access to lethal objects. Be there and support them. Help them connect to professionals who can help them Follow up Previous Next
