  • Walking and physiotherapy: A cost-effective solution to low back pain

Walking and physiotherapy: A cost-effective solution to low back pain Walking and physiotherapy: A cost-effective solution to low back pain Content Editor: Dr. Mohammed Kashif June 27, 2024 The Lancet Musculoskeletal disorders, Physical activity, Quality-adjusted life years As reported in the Global Burden of Disease Study 2021, low back pain is the ninth largest cause of disease burden globally. A study published in The Lancet found that a personalized walking and education intervention effectively reduces activity-limiting low back pain recurrence. The trial screened 3206 potential participants and randomly assigned 701 individuals with a history of low back pain to either an intervention group (351) or a control group (350). Participants received six sessions with a physiotherapist and independently followed a walking program, aiming to walk five times a week for at least 30 minutes daily for six months. 96% of the participants were followed up for at least 12 months. Results showed that the intervention group had a lower risk of recurrence (HR 0.72), with a median of 208 days to recurrence compared to 112 days in the control group. Secondary outcomes favored the intervention group, showing lower disability scores and higher quality of life at various times. Although the intervention incurred higher costs, it was cost-effective, with an incremental cost-effectiveness ratio of $7802 per QALY gained. Adverse events were similar across groups, with more lower extremity events but fewer low back pain-related events in the intervention group. Overall, the walking intervention reduced low back pain recurrence and improved quality of life. Click here to read more.

Poshan Tracker: Nourishing lives with real-time precision Content Editor: Dr. Manjeet Mohanty October 28, 2023 at 12:30:00 PM Malnutrition, Poshan Abhiyan, Innovative technology International organizations like UNICEF, WHO, and the World Bank have praised the Poshan Tracker for its impact on nutrition. The platform was operationalized with the collaboration of the World Bank and UNICEF. WHO recognizes it as a model for collecting administrative nutrition data. India's G-20 Presidency highlighted the Poshan Tracker's role in digitizing data for real-time monitoring and targeted interventions. Since April 2023, child measurement data on the Poshan Tracker has steadily risen from 63.4 million to 72.4 million children. Child wasting rates recorded on the platform have consistently stayed below 7.2%, in contrast to the 18.7% used in the Global Hunger Index 2023. However, the Global Hunger Index's accuracy is disputed. A 2023 report ranks India 111 out of 125 countries and is criticized for methodological flaws. It relies on a small sample size for one of its key indicators, leading to misleading results. In contrast, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) estimates India's proportion of the undernourished population at 16.6%. However, even this figure is questioned for its methodology and potential bias due to the limited sample size. Previous Next

WHO gold tier targets identifying at least 80% of individuals living with hepatitis C and treating at least 70% of those diagnosed. Egypt, having diagnosed 87% of diseased people and given 93% of those diagnosed curative treatment, has thus achieved the gold tier. The country is on its way to meeting all elimination targets by 2030. In barely over a decade, Egypt has successfully reduced its prevalence of hepatitis C from 10% to 0.38%, transitioning from one of the highest rates in the world to one of the lowest. The key players in achieving the 99% cure rate include: The National Committee for Control of Viral Hepatitis 100 million Seha campaign Locally manufactured antivirals Previous Next
