- With U.S. Funding Withdrawn, HIV Vaccine Research Faces Setback | PH Chronicle
With U.S. Funding Withdrawn, HIV Vaccine Research Faces Setback Content Editor: Dr. Aditi June 12, 2025 at 5:45:58 PM International Health News, Vaccine Trial, HIV Treatment A much-anticipated HIV vaccine trial set to begin in early 2025 has been abruptly halted after U.S. funding was withdrawn. The trial, developed under the BRILLIANT consortium , was expected to mark a significant milestone in HIV prevention in South Africa , the country with the world’s highest number of HIV-positive individuals. Despite having secured all necessary approvals, the research is now frozen, with vaccine doses sitting unused in laboratories. This sudden disruption is part of a broader wave of funding reductions that are affecting research and health services across the country, including shut down of clinics and staff losing jobs. The MATRIX project , focused on developing new HIV prevention methods for women, and launched in 2021, once operated across multiple African countries with support from USAID. With funding gone and partnerships dissolved, it has also been forced to shut down and there is little hope of revival. Researchers are now urgently looking for new sources of support, including potential collaborations with philanthropic groups and pharmaceutical companies. While the path forward remains uncertain, many believe that South Africa’s strong research foundation and determined scientific community can still find ways to continue the fight against HIV. Case of re-emerging illness, Murine Typhus, reported in Kerala Content Editor: Dr. Urmimala October 19, 2024 at 7:24:38 AM Infectious Disease, Re-emerging illness, Murine Typhus On 11th October 2024, the Kerala State Surveillance Unit, Directorate of Health Services, reported one case of Murine Typhus in Thiruvananthapuram district. A 75-year-old resident of Kerala, who had returned from Vietnam and Cambodia, fell ill on 8th September. After several tests and consideration of the travel history, the patient was diagnosed with Murine Typhus. The bacteria, Rickettsia typh i, causes illness in rats, cats, or opossums. The vector, the Oriental rat flea , can infect humans or animals through a bite that creates a wound. When flea dirt (flea feces containing the bacteria) is rubbed into the wound, it leads to infection. Symptoms include fever, chills, rash, and headache . While it can cause severe illness, the case fatality rate is less than 1%. Treatment with doxycycline aids recovery from the illness. Kerala has been reporting cases of scrub typhus, but this was the first case of Murine Typhus. Although the risk of spreading the illness is low , as it is not transmitted from human to human , preventive measures are recommended. They include keeping rodents away from homes and workplaces by maintaining safe, clean, and hygienic practices, and protecting oneself from flea bites. Click here to read more Previous Next

- Taxing antibiotics: A viable solution to fight AMR? | PH Chronicle
Taxing antibiotics: A viable solution to fight AMR? Content Editor: Dr. Chinmay July 25, 2024 at 4:00:00 PM Antimicrobial Resistance, Research Findings, Laws and policies A study by Bokhari FA et al. published in the International Journal of Industrial Organization explored using taxes to reduce antibiotic overuse and combat antibiotic resistance (AMR) . This significant global threat could cause millions of deaths by 2050. Overusing broad-spectrum antibiotics is a crucial driver of AMR, and narrow-spectrum drugs should be used when possible. Researchers propose taxing GP surgeries for using certain broad-spectrum antibiotics to incentivize using narrow-spectrum drugs, potentially reducing testing time and costs. Findings indicate that taxing broad-spectrum antibiotics can effectively lower their usage and promote a switch to narrow-spectrum alternatives . A 20% tax on all antibiotics could reduce overall use by 12.7%, but it is less effective for the most problematic antibiotics. Conversely, a targeted 20% tax on specific broad-spectrum antibiotics linked to AMR is more effective, reducing their use by 37.7% with a minor overall reduction (2.38%). Potential drawbacks include a minor consumer welfare loss and the need for broad-spectrum antibiotics in time-sensitive situations. However, the benefits of reducing AMR outweigh these drawbacks. - WHO report reveals tobacco and nicotine industry's targeted tactics to hook the youth | PH Chronicle
WHO report reveals tobacco and nicotine industry's targeted tactics to hook the youth Content Editor: Dr. Manjeet June 4, 2024 at 1:00:00 PM Tobacco, Smoking, e-cigarettes, Child health The report titled "Hooking the Next Generation" reveals how the tobacco and nicotine industry manipulates products, marketing, and policies to captivate the world's youth. As concerns mount, particularly with e-cigarette usage surpassing adult rates in various nations , the report underscores the urgent need for protective measures on the occasion of World No Tobacco Day on May 31st. The report underscores that globally, an alarming 37 million children aged 13–15 use tobacco, with e-cigarette use among adolescents surpassing that of adults in many countries. In the WHO European Region, 20% of 15-year-olds report recent e-cigarette use. Despite progress in curbing tobacco, the rise of e-cigarettes poses a new threat. Studies show e-cigarette use triples conventional cigarette use, especially among non-smoking youth. The marketing of candy-flavored products is a trap for children. Urging strong regulations, WHO calls for bans on flavored e-cigarettes, marketing restrictions, and increased public awareness. Youth advocates worldwide are resisting industry influence, with organizations like the Thailand Youth Institute and the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids leading the charge. Click here to read more.
