WHO prequalifies new Dengue vaccine TAK-003 Content Editor: Dr. Gurumurthy May 31, 2024 at 12:30:00 PM Vaccine, Infectious Disease On May 10, 2024, the World Health Organization (WHO) granted prequalification to TAK-003, a new dengue vaccine developed by Takeda. TAK-003, the second dengue vaccine to receive this status, is a live-attenuated vaccine containing weakened forms of all four dengue virus serotypes. The WHO prequalification list also includes CYD-TDV, a dengue vaccine developed by Sanofi Pasteur. WHO advises administering TAK-003 to children aged 6-16 years in regions with a high prevalence and transmission rate of dengue. The vaccine will be given in a two-dose regimen, with a three-month gap between doses. Dr. Rogerio Gaspar, WHO Director for Regulation and Prequalification, emphasized that TAK-003’s prequalification marks a significant advancement in broadening global access to dengue vaccines, making it eligible for purchase by UN agencies such as UNICEF and PAHO. He hoped that more vaccine developers would seek assessment to ensure vaccines reach all communities in need. Click here to read more Previous Next

Boosting Rural Healthcare: Jan Aushadhi Kendras Expand Through Primary Agriculture Cooperative Societies Content Editor: Dr. Anamika December 23, 2024 at 8:03:07 PM Jan Aushadhi Kendra (JAKs), Primary Agricultural Credit Societies (PACS), Universal Health Coverage, Health Access, Healthcare Affordability. Jan Aushadhi Kendras (JAKs) are pharmacies that have been established to provide affordable medicines in rural and underserved areas under the Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana (PMBJP) of the Department of Pharmaceuticals, Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers, Government of India (GoI). In an effort to provide generic medicines at affordable prices to hard-to-reach, underserved populations, the GoI has enabled the integration of JAKS with Primary Agricultural Credit Societies (PACS). PACS are well-established entities with their own infrastructure (such as land, building, and storage facilities), serving a vast rural network of over 13 crores small and marginal farmers. The establishment of JAKs at PACS allows them to serve as affordable medicine hubs in remote areas where health access is limited . The established trust of the rural population in PACS further aids in ensuring the success of these Kendras. Over 2,690 PACS have received approval, with 687 JAKs operational at PACS as of 30th November 2024. Other than at PACS, applications for establishing JAKs has been open to individuals, NGOs, trusts, societies, and private firms, with a 1 km minimum distance between two JAKs. Meet S.A.R.A.H : WHO’s new AI-powered robot Meet S.A.R.A.H : WHO’s new AI-powered robot Content Editor: Dr. Manu June 27, 2024 Social Trends WHO, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning WHO’s new AI chatbot released on 2nd April called S.A.R.A.H. or the Smart AI Resource Assistant for Health faces new challenges as it settles into its proposed role to be a tool for educating people and filling staffing gaps in healthcare globally. The tool is built up on Florence , a virtual health worker project which provided basic information on Covid-19 and tobacco . The tools are designed by a New Zealand based company called Soul Machines Ltd. It’s trained using OpenAI’s ChatGPT 3.5 with data till September 2021, thus it often returns inaccurate results. It has a limited purview and lacks a diagnostic feature , something that is common in the early days of AI development. The tool saves human expressions from the user’s data to be able to mimic human emotions. While WHO claims the data is deleted after 30 seconds and is anonymised with regards to the IP address, using open software exposes it to risk from cybercriminals. Thus, the chatbot needs to be carefully developed to become useful in the future. Click here to read more.
