- Do emerging pollutants and plastics contribute to the development of PCOS?
Do emerging pollutants and plastics contribute to the development of PCOS? Do emerging pollutants and plastics contribute to the development of PCOS? Content Editor: Dr. Aiswarya May 14, 2024 Reproductive Toxicology Environmental pollution, PCOS, Microplastics Growing industrialization and population negatively impact the environment by releasing emerging pollutants (EPs) , which are chemicals that arise from sources like pharmaceuticals, personal care products, and plastics , which are not commonly monitored but are increasingly detected in the environment. A review of articles published in Reproductive Toxicology summarizes the current evidence that consumption of microplastic-polluted water may enhance the risk of Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS). Zoologists conducted studies on zebrafish , which share roughly 70% of their genome with humans, and filled them in three tanks with fresh water, alongside letrozole and microplastics. After 21 days, the zebrafish exposed to letrozole and microplastics displayed ovarian changes and hormone disruptions that are found in PCOS. Studies have also suggested that exposure to microplastics contributed to ovarian fibrosis or excessive proliferation of connective tissue in the ovaries , one of the outcomes of PCOS, following exposure to microplastics. This study concludes that further studies are needed to address this issue. Click here to read more.

First Personalised CRISPR-based Successful gene-editing Therapy in an Infant Content Editor: Dr. Harshita May 23, 2025 at 3:33:24 PM Gene-editing therapy, genetic disorder The first successful gene-editing therapy promises an optimistic future for children diagnosed with genetic disorders. CRISPR , short for C lustered R egularly I nterspaced S hort P alindromic R epeats, is a gene-editing technology that helps scientists to modify DNA selectively. KJ Muldoon, the name of the first infant to receive such a therapy, was diagnosed with CPS-1 deficiency after experiencing lethargy and difficulty in breathing. Carbamoyl phosphate synthetase - 1 (CPS-1) deficiency is a urea cycle disorder that leads to high ammonia levels in the body due to a lack of the CPS-1 enzyme that converts ammonia to urea. Complications include multiple organ damage due to accumulation of ammonia, such as liver damage requiring a transplant, irreversible brain injury, and death, with mortality as high as 50%. The children usually do not survive long enough to receive the transplant. CRISPR-based scissors can precisely scan through the genetic code and pinpoint the exact error and correct it. Animal testing was conducted prior to the human experiment, for which researchers took FDA approval. Baby Muldoon received 3 doses of infusion in February, March, and April, which led to a decrease in doses of medicine and ammonia levels, helping baby Muldoon gain weight. The infant suffered two viral infections, vomiting and diarrhea post-infusion, but without causing a shoot-up in his ammonia levels. There were no serious side effects reported. Parents were relieved as medicine doses were halved with an increase in proteins in his diet, leading to weight gain. These therapies hold great promise for future generations , offering hope to parents of affected children through the potential of gene therapy, but more research is needed to know if they can be widely applied. Linear urban forest: A project aimed to mitigate effects of heat and improve health Content Editor: Dr. Soundhar August 1, 2024 at 1:00:00 PM Sustainable development, International health, Climate change Harvard’s Climate Change Solutions Fund supports the LUF, an interdisciplinary effort launched in April 2021 involving landscape designers, U.S. Forest Service biologists, municipal policy practitioners, and Harvard Chan environmental researchers. This was done to minimize the "urban heat island" effect, which consist of city areas with lots of concrete and asphalt. These areas absorb high levels of solar radiation and have few trees to provide shade, resulting in temperatures 10-12 degrees higher than those with more vegetation. This group has designed connected lanes of trees, shrubs, ferns, and other vegetation running along sidewalks or portions of streets. It also plans to quantify its climate and health-related benefits for U.S. cities using Springfield as a pilot. Kachina Studer, a digital technology specialist in visualization research and teaching laboratory, created a series of visualizations of how areas would look if they were filled with trees, which residents could view. In the future, this visualization might prove helpful in other U.S. cities, showing residents and city leaders what’s possible. Click here to read more. Previous Next
