The World Bank has withdrawn 3 working papers on India’s sanitation trends Content Editor: Pradipta S December 11, 2023 at 4:00:00 PM Sanitation, Swachh Bharat Mission, World Bank The World Bank has withdrawn 3 working papers citing technical issues amid alleged governmental pressure. The paper titled "Progress on Sanitation in Rural India: Reconciling Diverse Evidence" , highlighted that though Swachh Bharat Mission - Gramin (SBM-G) led to improved toilet access, toilet usage has been declining in rural India since 2018. SBM-G caused a substantial increase in rural toilet access - from 38% in 2012 to 90% in 2019-20. This study combined data from the National Family Health Survey, the National Sample Surveys, the National Annual Rural Sanitation Survey and the SBM-G’s Information System. Other papers that were taken down were: “What Lies Beneath? An Assessment of India’s Groundwater Quality And Monitoring Systems” and “Lifting the lid: Process and Delivery of the Swachh Bharat Mission”. Previous Next

  • Regulatory update: FSSAI bans '100% Fruit Juice' claims on reconstituted juices | PH Chronicle

Regulatory update: FSSAI bans '100% Fruit Juice' claims on reconstituted juices Content Editor: Dr. Sumana June 12, 2024 at 12:30:00 PM Food Safety, Food Adulteration, Food standards FSSAI mandates all Food Business Operators (FBOs ) to immediately remove ‘100% fruit juices’ claims from labels and ads of reconstituted fruit juices. FBOs were instructed to use all pre-printed packaging effectively by September 1, 2024. FSSAI found inaccurate marketing of reconstituted juices as ‘100% fruit juices,’ which is misleading since these contain mainly water. The Food Safety and Standards (Advertising and Claims) Regulations, 2018, prohibit ‘100%’ claims. FBOs must comply with sub-regulation 2.3.6 of the Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards & Food Additives) Regulation, 2011, and a compulsory mention of “reconstituted” on labels . Products with added sweeteners over 15 g/kg must be labeled ‘Sweetened juice.’ The FSSAI is committed to safeguarding public health by overseeing and enforcing food safety standards nationwide. ‘Jal Jeevan Mission: Transforming Lives with Piped Potable Water’ Content Editor: Nikhil Kumar Khatri June 26, 2023 at 4:48:29 PM Environmental Health, Jal Jeevan Mission, Santation, Piped potable water Piped potable water (PPW) across India will avert 4,00,000 diarrhoea deaths , and will avoid 14 million DALYs (Disability Adjusted Life Years) from diarrhoea. It will save close to $101 billion and 66.6 million hours every day of time that would otherwise have been spent predominantly by women collecting water. “Every dollar invested in sanitation interventions gives a $4.3 return in the form of reduced health care cost.” There is an increase of 16.6% in coverage of PPW from the commencement of the scheme. The centre has claimed that it will achieve 100% coverage by 2024. Five States, Gujarat, Telangana, Goa, Haryana and Punjab, and 3 Union Territories - Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Daman Diu & Dadra Nagar Haveli and Puducherry have reported 100% coverage for the scheme till now. The WHO study doesn't calculate avoided deaths at current coverage levels as well as did not account for PPW contamination. Previous Next

  • Study reveals renal disease following use of fairness creams | PH Chronicle

Study reveals renal disease following use of fairness creams Content Editor: Dr. Himabindu Reddy May 18, 2024 at 3:00:00 PM Research findings, Public health, Case series, Fairness creams The fascination with fair skin in Indian culture feeds the flourishing industry of skin fairness creams. Existing literature has already established an association between high mercury content in skin whitening products and membranous nephropathy (MN). The study included all patients diagnosed with NELL-1-MN in a private hospital in Kerala from July 2021 to September 2023. Heavy metal screening was done for those who had a positive history of fairness cream use. The study found that 13 out of 15 patients had applied fairness cream, with a median duration of application of 4 months. All the patients had nephrotic range proteinuria. 9 out of 11 patients had mercury levels higher than normal in blood, urine, or both. One patient with levels as high as 22.1 μg/L (normal range: 0.46–7.5 μg/L) showed a reduction to 2.42 μg/L within three months of stopping the application of the cream. The study emphasizes the need for further studies to strengthen the causation and to take measures to increase public awareness of the health effects of skin products. Click here to read more.
