- Breaking the malaria barrier: L9LS antibody offers hope against the disease | PH Chronicle
Breaking the malaria barrier: L9LS antibody offers hope against the disease Content Editor: Dr. Chinmay May 9, 2024 at 1:30:00 PM Malaria, Monoclonal antibody, international health news A new research study published in the New England Journal of Medicine shows promise for a potential malaria prevention breakthrough. A single subcutaneous injection of an antibody called L9LS protected children in Mali by up to 77% during the 6-month malaria season. The antibody was developed by scientists at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and had previously demonstrated 80% protection in adults during a phase 1 clinical trial. The researchers conducted a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled phase 2 trial with 225 children aged 6-10 in Mali, giving them either a 150mg or 300mg dose of L9LS or a placebo injection. All participants received a standard artemether-lumefantrine treatment 7 to 12 days before L9LS or a placebo to eliminate any existing infection. The main focus was to detect P. falciparum in the blood, with or without symptoms, through regular blood smear checks every two weeks for the following 6 months. When compared to traditional preventive measures like seasonal chemical interventions, monoclonal antibodies have advantages, especially in low-income countries, because of their one-time administration and potentially better adherence . Nigeria grapples with newborn antibiotic resistance crisis Content Editor: Dr. Sakshi Aggarwal August 12, 2024 at 4:00:00 PM Antibiotic Resistance, One Health, Public health Colistin is among the few antibiotics that are still useful in treating illnesses like pneumonia and eliminating microbes. The World Health Organisation considers it to be extremely significant for human medicine. The study, recently published in Nature Communications Journal, surveys the presence of mobile colistin resistance gene (mcr) genes in Nigeria, a country with limited clinical use of colistin. 4907 rectal swabs were collected from mothers and neonates across three hospital sites in Nigeria, 47 of which (40 from mothers and seven from neonates) carried mcr genes across a range of bacterial species. The mcr genes were found in 46 Enterobacter species, and single isolates of Shigella, E. coli, and Klebsiella quasipneumoniae. Although the prevalence during the 2015-2016 collection was low, the diversity of mcr-gene types and the range of bacterial species are concerning. The introduction of colistin in medical settings could rapidly select and expand resistant isolates. Click here to read more. Previous Next

M. pneumoniae infections on the rise in the United States M. pneumoniae infections on the rise in the United States Content Editor: Dr. Manu Goel March 19, 2024 Center for Disease Control and Prevention Infectious disease, International health News, Disease Outbreaks According to a report published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), cases of Mycoplasma pneumoniae are on the rise in the United States. Among school-aged children, M. pneumoniae is a common cause of respiratory infections. The data collected from the CDC’s National Syndromic Surveillance Program (NSSP) and New Vaccine Surveillance Network (NVSN) during three periods – pre-, during, and after the COVID-19 pandemic showed that while infections caused by this pathogen decreased during the pandemic period compared to pre-pandemic levels, they were on the rise in the post-pandemic period. The report concluded that healthcare providers should include M. pneumoniae in their differential diagnoses of community-acquired pneumonia during the fall and winter respiratory illness seasons. It also highlighted the need for continued surveillance of such infections and macrolide-resistant M. pneumoniae infections in the United States.
