This decline comes as a backdrop as the world sustained the biggest backslide in childhood immunization in the last 30 years. A report said that a total of 67 million children missed out on vaccinations between 2019 to 2021 , with vaccine coverage levels declining in 112 nations. Previous Next
- Boosting organ donation in India: The critical role of brain stem death certification and reporting | PH Chronicle
Boosting organ donation in India: The critical role of brain stem death certification and reporting Content Editor: Dr. Shubham June 1, 2024 at 12:30:00 PM Organ Donation, Public policy, Health awareness To increase organ donation rates, which are presently extremely low in India—with less than one donor per million population annually—the Indian Health Ministry has highlighted the significance of discovering brain stem deaths in hospitals. Brain Stem Death Certification: To raise the rate of organ donation, hospitals are urged to record brain stem deaths in great detail. The National Organ & Tissue Transplant Organization (NOTTO) is acknowledged as being instrumental in promoting organ donation by pressuring medical facilities to report brain deaths. Though there are over 150,000 possible occurrences of brain stem death in India each year, mostly from accidents, there were only 1,028 confirmed organ donors as of 2023. The health ministry is trying to increase awareness through the "Required Request Display Boards" and hospital data collection for analysis and improvement. It is recommended that hospitals set up procedures for notifying families about the possibility of organ donation and for announcing brain deaths. Click here to read more. Previous Next

The technique of Miyawaki afforestation (biofencing), i.e., planting indigenous, fast-growing plants to form a green belt 5-10m around the periphery of landfills, will help limit the spread of toxic gases, dust, and pollutants. The horticulture department aims to plant around 52 indigenous plant varieties. After the bio-remediation of the years-old legacy wastes, the process will soon start. This project will be implemented by an NGO named Green Yatra. Previous Next

WHO Road safety manual updated to better curb pedestrian deaths Content Editor: Dr. Himabindu Reddy May 11, 2023 at 4:58:31 PM Global health, Public health laws and regulations, Road safety, Accidents and Injuries Walking, a healthy habit, and an environment-friendly mode of transport, is fraught with safety risks with pedestrians accounting for nearly a quarter of all traffic fatalities . Pedestrian deaths are highest in WHO Africa region and these numbers are rising at double the rate of other road casualties. In a move to meet the United Nations' 2030 global target of a 50% reduction in mortality by road accidents, the World health organization(WHO), the Global road safety partnership(GRSP), and the World Bank have coproduced a revised Road-Safety manual to help governments limit and better manage the pedestrian fatalities in road traffic accidents. - Har Ghar Jal Initiative may fall short of its 2024 target
Har Ghar Jal Initiative may fall short of its 2024 target Har Ghar Jal Initiative may fall short of its 2024 target Content Editor: Dr. Subhana Siyad July 24, 2023 The Hindu Drinking Water and Sanitation, Har Ghar Jal, Environment, Jal Jeevan Mission The Har Ghar Jal initiative under the Jal Jeevan Mission, which PM Narendra Modi announced during his 2019 Independence Day address with a budget of ₹3.60 lakh crore, is predicted to miss its target to link all rural households to drinkable water by 2024. The mission's goal is to install tap connections that deliver at least 55 L of drinking water per person daily. By 2024, only 75% of households are expected to be covered, as the project gained momentum only in 2022 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, lack of personnel, state-specific issues, and even the Russia-Ukraine war. Work has not even started in 1 crore households (5% of the total), and it is estimated that it will not be complete even by 2025-26 if the work is not highly efficient. Only 58,357 of the 1,68,000 households with documented tap water availability have received certification under the scheme. Har Ghar Jal certification is only complete in 3%, 1.5%, and 1.5% of villages in UP, Rajasthan, and West Bengal, respectively. Bihar and Telangana have no villages that have certified their connection status. Only 8 States and UTs have stated that every village is completely linked; however, almost all of them had good connectivity in 2019 itself.
- NAFLD and Glycaemic Status as Predictors of CVD Risk | PH Chronicle
NAFLD and Glycaemic Status as Predictors of CVD Risk Content Editor: Dr. Anamika July 7, 2025 at 5:41:50 PM Type 2 Diabetes (T2D), Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD), Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) Study Objective: The study aimed to evaluate how glycaemic status influences long-term cardiovascular outcomes in individuals with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) . Methodology Researchers analyzed data from 1,057,775 adults in South Korea who were diagnosed with NAFLD during a national health screening in 2009. Participants were categorized based on fasting glucose levels into three groups: normal fasting glucose (NFG), impaired fasting glucose (IFG), and type 2 diabetes (T2D) . They were followed for a median duration of 11.3 years to track incidences of myocardial infarction (MI), stroke, and cardiovascular (CV) death. Key Findings During the follow-up period, the study recorded 26,491 heart attacks, 55,791 strokes, and 11,147 cardiovascular deaths . After adjusting for potential confounders, individuals with T2D had significantly elevated risks 39% higher for both MI and stroke , and 46% higher for CV death —compared to those with normal glucose levels. The IFG group did not show a statistically significant increase in risk. Notable Insight: The increased cardiovascular risk in the T2D group was especially evident among younger, non-obese individuals without hypertension suggesting that traditional risk profiles may underestimate CVD risk in this subgroup. Conclusion: T2D markedly increases CVD risk in those with NAFLD , underscoring the need for early detection and integrated disease management.Click here to read more Previous Next

- Population-level impact of ban on alcohol: Findings from a quasi-experimental study | PH Chronicle
Population-level impact of ban on alcohol: Findings from a quasi-experimental study Content Editor: Dr. Swathi Shenoy June 12, 2024 at 12:30:00 PM Alcohol Intake, Public Health Laws, Prevention Alcohol intake is a significant risk factor for over 200 diseases. Even though the levels of alcohol intake in India are lower when compared to other countries, the levels are on the rise. In 2016, Bihar initiated the Bihar Prohibition and Excise Act , which halted the production, sale, and consumption of alcohol in the state . A quasi-experimental study was conducted to understand the effects of this ban on a set of outcomes, including Weekly alcohol intake Body weight and obesity Noncommunicable diseases such as DM and hypertension Intimate partner violence (IPV) experienced by women The study used data from the National Family Health Survey 3, 4, and 5. A difference-in-difference (DID) model was used to compare the outcomes between Bihar and the neighboring states, and a triple difference model (DDD) was used to add the male-female interaction. The ban led to the prevention of the following: 2.4 million cases of daily/weekly alcohol consumption. 1.8 million cases of overweight/obesity among males . 2.1 million cases of IPV among females .
