  • Are we at a standstill in our efforts to reduce anemia? | PH Chronicle

Are we at a standstill in our efforts to reduce anemia? Content Editor: Dr. Ashwini July 29, 2023 at 12:30:00 PM Anemia, Maternal and Child Health Anaemia is a significant global public health issue. Anaemia has severe consequences, impairing development, increasing infection and death risks, and impacting families and communities economically. However, the 2023 World Health Statistics report reveals a decade of non-significant improvement in key health indicators, including anemia. In 2019, 40% of children aged six months to 5 years, 36% of pregnant women, and 30% of women aged 15-49 experienced anemia. However, the reduction rate since 2000 has been only 0-1% annually , much slower than other health indicators. Accurately measuring anemia is challenging, especially in resource-limited settings and among young children. Costly and complex tests hinder the acquisition of reliable data. To address anemia effectively, updated and comprehensive national surveys covering all age groups, particularly adolescents, are necessary. The newly published WHO framework emphasizes context-appropriate interventions informed by local data. While iron deficiency is a common cause, addressing other factors specific to populations and settings is vital. Effective interventions may include improved water, sanitation, hygiene, infection prevention, control measures, awareness, and treatment for inherited blood disorders. A holistic approach is essential in tackling poverty, food insecurity, healthcare access, education, conflict, climate change, and gender inequality. Integrating anemia screening and treatment with existing programs for antenatal care, skilled birth attendance, and school-based initiatives can yield positive results. Fortification, supplementation, and nutrition education also contribute to reducing anemia risk. Urgent action led by local communities and supported by global leadership is necessary to combat anemia and improve global public health. Previous Next

  • How does physical activity affect a child’s liver health? | PH Chronicle

How does physical activity affect a child’s liver health? Content Editor: Dr. Sakshi Aggarwal June 7, 2024 at 12:30:00 PM Children, Liver steatosis, Non-communicable Diseases, Research findings Using data from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC), which involved 2684 participants, the research tracked these activity levels from age 11 over 13 years. It assessed liver health and enzyme levels at age 24. The major findings of the study include: 1. Increased sedentary time (ST) from ages 11 to 24 is associated with higher chances of developing liver cirrhosis, severe liver steatosis, and elevated liver enzyme levels (ALT, AST, and GGT) by age 24. 2. Increased light physical activity (LPA) is linked to lower odds of liver cirrhosis, severe liver steatosis, and decreased liver enzyme levels. 3. Moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) reduces the odds of severe liver steatosis, partly through reduced fat mass, but does not significantly impact liver cirrhosis risk. Promoting LPA and MVPA while reducing ST in childhood helps prevent severe liver conditions in young adulthood. Click here to read more. Previous Next

  • ICMR unveils findings on cancer incidence in India post-GLOBOCAN 2022 report | PH Chronicle

ICMR unveils findings on cancer incidence in India post-GLOBOCAN 2022 report Content Editor: Dr Manu March 22, 2025 at 2:16:21 PM Cancer, Mortality Rate, GLOBOCAN report, ICMR A comprehensive-retrospective, cross-sectional study conducted by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) recently released its findings on the cancer incidence rates in India based on the 2022 report by the Global Cancer Observatory (GLOBOCAN) . Following are the salient findings - India lies third in the Southeast Asian region in terms of cancer incidence and third in absolute numbers incidence globally after the USA and China with the numbers to increase in the coming years as India undergoes a demographic shift with an increase in the middle-aged and geriatric population. The middle-aged and geriatric age groups account for the highest burden of cancer incidence and mortality with the minimum being in children and reproductive age cohorts. Meanwhile, cancer-related mortalities are expected to rise quicker in women than in men (1.2%-4.4% vs 1.2%-2.4% annual per cent change) The highest burden among women was caused by breast cancer (13.8%), followed by oral (10.3%) and cervical cancer (9.2%) . Meanwhile, among men , oral cancer (13%) had the highest burden, followed by respiratory (11.6%) and esophageal cancer (6.7%) . In light of these findings, the authors advise building a strong framework to support screening, diagnosis and treatment of this rising burden of cancers in the coming years that threatens to overwhelm the healthcare sector.
