- 20th World Blood Donation Day: Highlighting the need for increased voluntary blood donations | PH Chronicle
20th World Blood Donation Day: Highlighting the need for increased voluntary blood donations Content Editor: Dr. Gurumurthy June 10, 2024 at 1:00:00 PM Blood Donation, Public health On June 14, 2024, World Blood Donor Day will celebrate its 20th anniversary with the theme: “20 years of celebrating giving: thank you, blood donors!” This milestone provides an opportunity to thank blood donors worldwide for their life-saving contributions and emphasize their significant impact on patients and donors. Annually, 118.5 million blood donations are collected worldwide, 40% of which come from high-income countries, representing only 16% of the global population. In low-income countries, 54% of blood transfusions are given to children under five , while in high-income countries, 76% are for patients over 60. Between 2008 and 2018, voluntary unpaid blood donations increased by 10.7 million. Seventy-nine countries now obtain over 90% of their blood supply from voluntary, unpaid donors . However, 54 countries still depend on family/replacement or paid donors for more than half of their supply. Also, out of 171 reporting countries, only 56 produce plasma-derived medicinal products (PDMP) through plasma fractionation. Ninety-one countries imported all their PDMP, 16 reported no use of PDMP, and eight did not provide data. The plasma volume for fractionation per 1000 people varies widely among 45 reporting countries, from 0.1 to 52.6 liters, with a median of 5.2 liters. This year, the campaign seeks to promote a culture of regular blood donation among young people and the general public and to enhance the diversity and sustainability of the blood donor pool. - Trends of child mortality in India: Findings from the National Family Health Survey | PH Chronicle
Trends of child mortality in India: Findings from the National Family Health Survey Content Editor: Dr. Sakshi Aggarwal May 20, 2024 at 1:30:00 PM Child Mortality, NFHS Data, Infant Mortality, Child Health The representative population-based analysis employed repeated cross-sectional data from the five rounds of the National Family Health Survey , which were carried out in 1992–1993; 1998–1999; 2005–2006; 2015–2016; and 2019–2021. The four early life stages of early-neonatal (first seven days), late-neonatal (eight to twenty-eight days), post-neonatal (eight days to eleven months), and kid (12-59 months) mortality rates were calculated. The reduction in mortality throughout the early-neonatal and post-neonatal phases of mortality was comparatively slower in this repeated cross-sectional research of five time periods, with considerable variability across states and UTs. The mortality rates were lowest for the late-neonatal and child periods ; whereas early-neonatal was the highest in 2021. It was found that child mortality had a substantial decrease between 1993 and 2021, from 33.5 to 6.9 deaths per 1000. Currently, deaths are most commonly seen in the early-neonatal (48.3% of total deaths in children younger than 5 years) and postneonatal (25.6%) periods. The results indicate that prioritizing policies related to early and postnatal mortality and ensuring that policies and interventions are tailored to the specific setting is necessary. Climate chaos uproots 43 Million children: UNICEF's alarming report Content Editor: Dr. Sangya Chaudhary October 21, 2023 at 12:30:00 PM Child Health, Disaster Management, Climate Change A new analysis by UNICEF revealed that between 2016 and 2021, weather-related disasters resulted in 43.1 million internal displacements of children across 44 countries. China and the Philippines recorded the highest absolute numbers due to their exposure to extreme weather and large child populations. Small island states like Dominica and Vanuatu were most affected by storms, while Somalia and South Sudan were highly affected by floods. Floods and storms accounted for 95% of displacements. Droughts caused over 1.3 million child displacements, predominantly in Somalia. Wildfires led to 810,000 displacements, with a third occurring in 2020. Climate change-driven movements pose escalating challenges for children, necessitating strengthened community preparedness and support for displaced children. In response to the findings, UNICEF has urged the government and stakeholders to protect them by: Improving child critical services Preparing them to live in a world with a changed climate Prioritize them in policy-making Previous Next

The past two and a half years alone accounted for 10% of the overall rise in sea level since the satellite measurements started nearly 30 years ago. Sea level rise will affect some 900 million people living in coastal zones in Bangladesh, China, India and the Netherlands. The population potentially exposed to 100-year coastal floods is projected to increase about 20% if the global mean sea level rises by 0.15 meters relative to 2020 levels.
