Development of antibiotic resistance due to biofilm formation on the incision site or in the soft tissue inside, is one of the major causes. Researchers from ARCI, Hyderabad, an autonomous institute of the Department of Science and Technology (DST), have developed a nanocomposite coating (named as ATL) by combining water repellent (hydrophobic) and biocidal properties using a combinatorial approach. The ATL-coated sutures have demonstrated Higher percentage of biofilm inhibition Non- cytotoxicity when compared to triclosan-coated antibacterial sutures, which have shown cytotoxic properties. • The rising concern about smokeless tobacco use among pregnant women | PH Chronicle

The rising concern about smokeless tobacco use among pregnant women Content Editor: Dr. Sathya Prashaath May 21, 2024 at 1:30:00 PM Tobacco, Pregnant Women, Smokeless Tobacco A study published in The Lancet Regional Health - Southeast Asia shows alarming rates of tobacco use among pregnant and lactating women in India. The data from the National Family Health Survey-5 was used for the study. This is a public health concern threatening the well-being of both mothers and their children. Tobacco use among currently married pregnant and lactating women stands at 2.5% and 3.2%, respectively. 85.6% of these women are using smokeless tobacco (SLT) , which is culturally more acceptable but no less harmful. Age, employment status, and wealth quintile were found to be the significant predictors of smoked tobacco use among pregnant women. For lactating women, the middle wealth quintile and the South Indian region emerge as key predictors. The study calls for immediate action to integrate tobacco awareness and cessation services into routine antenatal examinations. The research underscores the need for targeted interventions and policies, which will address the unique challenges faced by pregnant and lactating women. Click here to read more. Previous Next

  • Inequalities in the impact of universal health coverage according to the wealth quantiles.

Inequalities in the impact of universal health coverage according to the wealth quantiles. Inequalities in the impact of universal health coverage according to the wealth quantiles. Content Editor: Dr. Sumana May 18, 2024 Lancet Universal health coverage, Inequalities, Mortality rates The article investigates the impact of expanding Universal Health Coverage (UHC) on infant mortality rates in Low- and Middle-Income countries (LMICs). It finds that while UHC expansion is linked to reduced infant mortality, the benefits are often skewed towards wealthier populations. The analysis emphasizes the importance of the UHC service coverage index in affecting infant mortality rates across different wealth quintiles The study included over 4 million births in 60 LMICs (2000-2019) and found that each one-unit increase in the UHC index reduced infant mortality by 1.2% (0.57 fewer deaths per 1000 live births), preventing an estimated 15.5 million infant deaths. Initially, UHC expansion benefited poorer populations more, but this advantage decreased with broader coverage. That is, early UHC expansion led to larger mortality reductions in the poorest quintile (0.84 fewer deaths per 1000) compared to the wealthiest (0.59), but as coverage increased, reductions became more similar across both groups (quintile 1: 0.64; quintile 5: 0.57). Significant disparities in antenatal care coverage and quality exist across 63 LMICs, underscoring the need to improve maternal healthcare to enhance maternal and child health outcomes. • Pandemic-Related Mortality Trends Among Adults in California, 2016–2023

Pandemic-Related Mortality Trends Among Adults in California, 2016–2023 Pandemic-Related Mortality Trends Among Adults in California, 2016–2023 Content Editor : Dr. Sudeep August 26, 2025 American Journal of Public Health COVID-19, immigrants, vulnerable population, Access to healthcare Researchers examined death certificates for all California residents ≥ 25 years who died from natural causes during 2016-2023. Comparing pre-pandemic mortality and the difference in outcomes during pandemic years (and accounting for seasonal variation), the team modelled absolute and relative excess mortalities. Researchers then found a 55% increase in death rate for undocumented immigrants above pre-pandemic level, which was observed to be 22% for documented immigrants and only 12% for US-born citizens. For instance, essential workers of Latino descent (undocumented) had a surprising 91% increase in deaths as compared to US-born white citizens (8%). This study highlights the growing disparity in access to basic healthcare, segregated along ethnic lines in the United States, and the need to protect these vulnerable sections before the next pandemic hits.
