Sugar-sweetened beverages: 23% rise in intake Content Editor: Dr. Prachi September 6, 2024 at 3:30:00 PM Nutrition, Diet, Lifestyle, Obesity A population-based study spanning children and adolescents across 185 countries was recently published in the British Medical Journal. The study analyzed the trends in the intake of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) among them from 1990 to 2018. The study found that the intake of SSBs in the target population increased by almost 23%. The increase was heterogeneously distributed globally, with the highest amount in Latin America and the Caribbean (9.1 servings/week) and the highest in Africa (106%). The factors related to increased intake were: Older children (vs younger children) Urban areas (vs rural areas) Parents with higher education (vs lower education) These trends parallel those of obesity in these populations, thus possibly implicating the role of SSBs in increasing levels of obesity among children and adolescents. • FDA approves new drug for treatment of Typhoid | PH Chronicle

FDA approves new drug for treatment of Typhoid Content Editor: Dr. Sakshi Aggarwal May 17, 2024 at 2:30:00 PM Typhoid Management, Research Findings Typhoid, which is caused by Salmonella Typhimurium, is well recognized as a serious hazard to public health, particularly in India. This bacterium has developed resistance because of the indiscriminate use of antibiotics, which presents a significant challenge in the treatment of diseases. A study published in the Redox Biology Journal explores the Process : 1. Spermidine triggers various antioxidant responses in Salmonella , regulating key genes to mitigate oxidative stress . 2. The bacteria mutants lacking spermidine transport and synthesis show high ROS levels, leading to reduced phagocytosis by macrophages , and decreased survival under oxidative stress and in mouse infection models. The study found that an FDA-approved drug DFMO (difluoromethylornithine), which inhibits host polyamine biosynthesis , reduces Salmonella infection and tissue damage in mice, improving survival rates. This study conducted at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc ), Bangalore, India, opens the scope for further research in humans to determine its effectiveness. Click here to read more. Even after commitment from all six WHO regions, no region has achieved and maintained the elimination successfully by the end of 2023. It was estimated that MCV1 (Measles containing vaccine) coverage decreased from 86% to 81% in 2021 during COVID-19 Pandemic and increased by 13% in 2022 with figures remaining unchanged in 2023. During COVID-19 in 2019-2021 Coverage in all regions decreased. However, post COVID-19 it increased only in the American and European regions. As of 2023 the coverage was 64% in low-income countries , 86% in middle income countries and 94% in high income countries. • India Shows Strong Decline in Maternal and Child Mortality, Nears its 2030 Targets - SRS Report 2021

India Shows Strong Decline in Maternal and Child Mortality, Nears its 2030 Targets - SRS Report 2021 India Shows Strong Decline in Maternal and Child Mortality, Nears its 2030 Targets - SRS Report 2021 Content Editor: Dr. Shayari June 3, 2025 Press Information Bureau Health Indicators, Maternal and Child Health, Sustainable Development Goals As per the Sample Registration System (SRS) Report 2021 released by the Registrar General of India (RGI) , on 07th May, 2025, India is witnessing a significant and steady decline in maternal and child mortality rates, putting the nation on a strong path towards achieving its 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) specifically, Goal 3 (SDG 3) : Good Health and Well-being. Key Outcome Indicators The maternal mortality ratio (MMR) (per lakh live births) fell significantly, from 130 between 2014 and 2016, to 93 between 2019 and 2021. The infant mortality rate (IMR) per 1,000 live births decreased from 39 in 2014 to 27 in 2021. From 2014 to 2021, the neonatal mortality rate (NMR) per 1,000 live births decreased from 26 to 19 . The Under-Five Mortality Rate (U5MR) per 1,000 live births dropped from 45 in 2014 to 31 in 2021. The sex ratio at birth improved from 899 in 2014 to 913 in 2021. These sustained improvements, driven by focused interventions, directly contribute to SDG target 3.1 (reducing MMR to less than 70), and SDG target 3.2 (ending preventable child deaths: To reduce NMR to <=12 and U5MR to at least as low as 25 ). These health indicators reveal India is progressing at a rate greater than the worldwide average.

  • Blocking IL-33 to prevent cancer: New study highlights Pitavastatin's potential | PH Chronicle

Blocking IL-33 to prevent cancer: New study highlights Pitavastatin's potential Content Editor: Dr. Manjeet June 7, 2024 at 12:30:00 PM Research findings, Cancer, Prevention A recent study demonstrates that the TLR3/4-TBK1-IRF3 pathway connects environmental insults to IL-33 induction in skin and pancreatic inflammation. Scientists screened an FDA-approved drug library and found pitavastatin effectively suppresses IL-33 by blocking TBK1 membrane recruitment via the mevalonate pathway. Pitavastatin was shown to prevent chronic pancreatitis and its cancerous outcomes in an IL-33-dependent manner. This pathway is highly active in human chronic pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer. Pitavastatin use correlates with a reduced risk of these conditions, highlighting statins as a potential preventative strategy against inflammation-induced cancer . Future research will focus on exploring the impact of statins on preventing cancer development linked to chronic inflammation in the liver and gastrointestinal tract. Additionally, efforts will be made to identify other novel therapeutic approaches to suppress cancer-prone chronic inflammation. Click here to read more. Previous Next
