- Emerging threat: Rise in non-toxigenic C. diphtheriae infections in Washington State | PH Chronicle
Emerging threat: Rise in non-toxigenic C. diphtheriae infections in Washington State Content Editor: Dr. Chinmay May 13, 2024 at 12:30:00 PM Corynebacterium diphtheriae, International health news, CDC A recent study looked into a worrying increase in infections from non-toxigenic Corynebacterium diphtheriae in Washington State. Non-toxigenic C. diphtheriae is a strain that does not produce the toxin responsible for classic diphtheria, but can still cause infections. The number of cases in Washington rose ten times between 2012 and 2023 , mostly around King County. The investigation found that most infections were in people without stable housing or who had recently used illegal drugs . While skin wounds were the most common site of infection (78%), blood (12%) and other body fluids were also affected. Some patients developed serious complications like endocarditis (4%). The toxin directly caused no direct deaths, but 14 patients died during the study period. Also, evidence suggests that the increased use of advanced laboratory techniques probably did not cause the rise in cases. The findings are similar to a 2011 Canadian study, pointing to a trend among vulnerable populations. Click here to read more. Previous Next

Khadirarishta - claimed to treat tumours 2. Ekangveer ras - claimed to treat paralysis 3. Simhadi guggulu - claimed to treat rheumatism and tumors 4. Drug and Magic Remedies Act, of 1984, prohibits any such advertisements about drugs providing treatments for certain ailments because of their magical qualities . It is a punishable offense with imprisonment of about 6 months with or without a fine. It is extremely important to stop such medicines from being so easily available on the market, as self-medication of such drugs poses a great threat to humanity. These can be harmful in terms of antimicrobial resistance, rendering infections non-responsive to appropriate treatment and increasing the risk of disease spread, severe illness, and death.

- Novel AI tool for diagnosis of acute otitis media | PH Chronicle
Novel AI tool for diagnosis of acute otitis media Content Editor: Dr. Prachi Goswami March 13, 2024 at 2:45:00 PM AI in Healthcare, Diagnostic tests, Infections Acute otitis media is one of the most common ear conditions in children for which antibiotics are prescribed. Its diagnosis is mostly clinical but diagnostic accuracy is low overall leading to inappropriate antibiotic usage. A new AI tool using a deep residual-recurrent neural network algorithm has been developed at the University of Pittsburgh, US. The tool has a sensitivity of 93.8% (95% confidence interval [CI], 92.6% to 95.0%) and a specificity of 93.3% (95% CI, 92.5% to 94.1%). This could help in use by trained paramedical staff, documentation for records, and discussion with parents. Improved diagnosis can help reduce inappropriate use of antimicrobials for this common condition. The drawbacks of the study include the following: The selection of the training and testing data The gold standard used for comparison was the opinion of the expert otoscopists, rather than myringotomy and tympanocentesis (since they are invasive procedures). - Who let the dogs out? | PH Chronicle
Who let the dogs out? Content Editor: Monk May 11, 2023 at 4:58:35 PM Public Health , Rabies, Anti-Rabies vaccine Rabies is caused by a Ribonucleic Acid(RNA) virus that is present in the saliva of a rabid animal. It is transmitted following a bite of a rabid animal that leads to deposition of the saliva and the virus in the wound. India accounts for more than one-third of the world’s rabies deaths. Each year, as many as 20,000 people die due to the vaccine-preventable fatality. India has a population of 30 million stray dogs which cause 96% of rabies in humans. It's not like India produces lesser number of doses than required — against an annual demand of 48 million ARV doses, the country produces 50 million. However, 30% of those vaccines — 15 million — are exported, leaving India with a shortfall of 13 million. The shortage has led to surge in demand and doubling of price in summer months, when dogs are in heat period and aggressive for mating. Government hospitals have resorted to local purchase of ARV, which has seen a uptick in OOPE for the patients(Approx. Rs.2000.) Efficient planning & stocking; Stray dogs sterilization drive; Inter-ministerial co-ordination; PPPs; Reporting the sight of rabid animal to authorities. Previous Next

Cleaner air: A surprising driver of legionnaire's disease rise? Cleaner air: A surprising driver of legionnaire's disease rise? Content Editor: Dr. Rashmi Verma April 2, 2024 Center for Disease Control Legionnaire's Disease, International Health News, Infectious Diseases Between 2000 and 2018, Legionnaire's disease cases surged , and these outbreaks were one of the primary causes of water-related outbreaks. Upon further inquiry into the cause of such an increase in the disease outbreaks, it was noticed that diminished sulfur dioxide levels were linked to increased Legionnaires' Disease instances , as the bacteria thrived longer in less acidic environments. New York researchers investigated the uptick, focusing on cooling towers. They analyzed data to understand and stop the spread, especially in places where people are more likely to get sick. This understanding of airborne transmission can aid in prediction and control measures. Hence, collaborative efforts are essential in combating these waterborne diseases, with emphasis on the need for coordinated responses and preventive strategies Click here to read more
