Our minds, our rights- World mental health day 2023 Content Editor: Dr. Himabindu Reddy November 1, 2023 at 12:30:00 PM WHO, Mental health, Global health, Public health, Human rights World Mental Health Day this year also marks the 75th anniversary of the WFMH foundation in 1948. This day is a chance for everyone to come together to increase understanding and awareness and to motivate actions that support and reinforce mental health as a fundamental human right for everyone. WHO persists in its efforts to promote and protect mental well-being and stresses urgent action to ensure quality mental healthcare is available to all those who need it. On this occasion, the WFMH secretary general remarked that despite continued campaigns by international and regional organizations, stigma and stereotypes persist in the community, leading to pervasive human rights violations of individuals with mental health disorders. To end this, efforts to invest in and transform mental healthcare facilities need to be doubled. Previous Next

- The plight of Trans-genders in Pakistan | PH Chronicle
The plight of Trans-genders in Pakistan Content Editor: Dr. Tanya October 19, 2024 at 7:24:42 AM Social Trends Only 221 transgenders currently benefit from the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) , a key social protection initiative that provides PKR 10,500 (approximately $37.50) quarterly to 8.6 million recipients nationwide. Following the devastating floods of 2022 , about 95% of transgender individuals were unable to access relief programs due to challenges in producing identity documents. Many lack ownership papers for their residences and utility bills in their names, which further complicates their eligibility for assistance. Additionally, few have been able to participate in the government's free solar panel distribution initiative launched in August. Transgender individuals are notably absent from Pakistan's National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) disaster management guidelines , highlighting systemic gaps in support for this community. Youth facing rising burden of infectious diseases Content Editor: Dr. Subhana Siyad Infectious disease, Under five, Adolescent, Mortality • A study published in the Lancet analysed the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019, conducted in November 2021, and concluded that the global focus on decreasing infectious disease burden among preschool children must be expanded to older children. • The year 2019 lost 30 million youth lives to infectious diseases and 30 million years to disabilities. • The communicable disease burden among under-five children have reduced from 85% in 1990 to 75% in 2019 because of significant public health improvements. However older children and adolescents in poorer nations have an increasing burden of diarrhoea, pneumonia, malaria, TB and HIV. • More than 50% of the mortality in youth worldwide were contributed by low income countries, majorly from India, Nigeria and Pakistan. Vaccine-preventable diseases like diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus, measles, and chickenpox claimed 228,758 youth lives worldwide, with 66.9% occurring in low-resource nations. • The study also suggested that larger strategies that tackle socioeconomic obstacles must be funded, such as improving access to healthcare for adolescent girls living with HIV. Increasing antiviral resistance among HIV patients Content Editor: Dr. Prayag Khandelwal March 18, 2024 at 4:42:13 PM Drug Resistance, HIV, WHO Guidelines Since 2018, WHO has recommended dolutegravir as the preferred first- and second-line HIV treatment for all populations. Compared to other drugs, it is more effective, less addictive, and has fewer side effects. It also has a high genetic barrier to the development of resistance. However, among the four reported surveys, resistance to dolutegravir ranged from 3.9% to 8.6%, and reached 19.6% among people experienced with treatment and transitioned to a DTG-containing ART while having high HIV viral loads. WHO recommends that countries systematically implement standard HIV surveillance to monitor the prevalence and patterns of drug resistance in people who do not achieve viral load suppression. This report also documents cases of I ntegrase S trand T ransfer I nhibitor (INSTI ) resistance after recent exposure to Cabotegravir (CAB-LA) . A delay in detection and confirmation of HIV infection may increase the risk of developing INSTI resistance. From 2022, WHO has recommended the use of long-acting injectable CAB-LA as an additional HIV prevention option for people at high risk of HIV infection. Previous Next
