World Zoonosis Day: The need to differentiate between zoonotic diseases and animal diseases World Zoonosis Day: The need to differentiate between zoonotic diseases and animal diseases Content Editor: Dr. Prachi July 26, 2024 Press Information Bureau One Health, Zoonotic Disease, Public health World Zoonoses Day is celebrated on 6 July in honor of Louis Pasteur, who administered the first rabies vaccine on this day in 1885. The interactive session tried to differentiate between zoonotic diseases and those affecting animals. Species-specific animal diseases, such as Foot and mouth Disease and lumpy Skin Disease, do not pose a threat to humans but may lead to unnecessary fear of animals. The session emphasized that all animal diseases are not zoonotic, citing the recent detection of African swine fever in the Thrissur district of Kerala. Prevention of zoonotic diseases requires integrated efforts combining vaccination, hygiene, husbandry practices, and cross-disciplinary collaboration under the One Health approach. The department has launched nationwide Brucella and Rabies vaccination campaigns and implemented an animal disease surveillance plan. The National Joint Outbreak Response Team (NJORT) has been established with multi-agency experts for collaborative outbreak investigations. Click here to read more.

Jal Jeevan Mission: Process in water accessibility Jal Jeevan Mission: Process in water accessibility Content Editor: Dr. Sumana September 5, 2024 Press Information Bureau Environmental health, Water access, National programmes The Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM), launched by the Government of India in partnership with States, has made significant strides in providing potable tap water to rural households. As of August 2024, more than 15.04 crore rural households (77.87%) now have tap water connections, a substantial increase from 3.23 crore in August 2019. The mission also emphasizes community participation, with over 5.32 lakh Pani Samitis formed at the Gram Panchayat level and 24.64 lakh women trained to test water samples using Field Test Kits (FTKs). The mission's success is largely attributed to its digital monitoring systems , including the JJM dashboard and mobile app , which provide real-time data on water supply status across villages. Moreover, sensor-based IoT solutions are used to measure and monitor water quality, ensuring the supply meets BIS:10500 standards. Digital tools also enable the geo-tagging of assets and linking of AADHAR for targeted delivery, promoting transparency and accountability. Challenges such as water scarcity, geogenic contaminants, and technical capacity issues are being addressed through various government measures, including financial assistance and skill development programs. The mission's success is further bolstered by the Jal Shakti Abhiyan: Catch the Rain campaign , focusing on sustainable water management. Click here to read more.

- Water quality index? Delhi Jal Board's real-time monitoring system | PH Chronicle
Water quality index? Delhi Jal Board's real-time monitoring system January 25, 2023 at 5:24:41 AM Environment To get a better assessment of the quality of the drinking water supplied to different parts of the capital, a holistic and real-time monitoring system is being planned by Delhi Jal Board (DJB). The water quality monitoring system will be based on artificial intelligence. Advantages: 1. By only entering the pin code of any particular area, a resident will be able to see the water quality index at the source, after treatment and inside the underground reservoir. 2. DJB officials can generate accurate reports about the quality of water. 3. It would help the officials check contamination quickly and manage water supply better. Previous Next
- Global Summit Highlights AI’s Role in Sustainable Development Goals
Global Summit Highlights AI’s Role in Sustainable Development Goals Global Summit Highlights AI’s Role in Sustainable Development Goals Content Editor: Dr. Chinmay July 15, 2025 United Nations Artificial Intelligence, International Health News The AI for Good Global Summit 2025, hosted in Geneva on 8th July 2025 by the UN’s International Telecommunication Union (ITU) , brings together global leaders, technologists, youth, and civil society to explore how artificial intelligence can advance the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) while addressing its risks. ITU Secretary-General Doreen Bogdan-Martin warned that the greatest danger lies not in AI replacing humanity , but in rapidly embedding AI across society without public understanding or adequate regulation . Concerns over emerging “agentic AI” systems capable of autonomous decisions include bias, inequality, energy use, and lack of oversight . The summit features over 200 tech demonstrations, from flying cars to AI-driven disaster tools. Workshops tackle AI applications in healthcare, education, ethics, and governance. On AI Governance Day, global regulators will confront the fact that 85% of countries still lack dedicated AI policies. Health is a key focus, with WHO leading discussions on AI innovations in low-resource healthcare and traditional medicine. Youth robotics teams and startups compete with AI solutions for climate resilience and education, while the AI for Good Awards celebrate impactful public-benefit projects. The summit underscores a shared goal: directing AI to serve people and the planet responsibly.
