- Concerns of ash disposal in Delhi
Concerns of ash disposal in Delhi Concerns of ash disposal in Delhi Content Editor: Prayag Khandelwal February 17, 2024 Social Trends Environmental Health, Waste disposal The ash generated from Waste-to-Energy Plants contains heavy metals and unburnt toxic chemicals which contaminates the underground water table. To dispose of the ash produced by the WTEPs in Okhla and Tehkhand, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has constructed an ESL facility in Tehkhand. The amount of trash (ash) to be disposed of daily is 100 tonnes, and this ESL has a capacity of 9.23 lakh cubic meters. ESL is projected to live for 6.5 years, according to MCD . Following the filling of ESL, MCD will begin looking for other land and in Delhi, land is an extremely valuable resource. Consequently, bricks and other materials that can be used in construction operations must be made from the ash produced by all of Delhi's current waste-to-energy facilities.
- Revised COVID-19 therapeutic guidelines. | PH Chronicle
Revised COVID-19 therapeutic guidelines. Content Editor: Dr. Rashmi Verma November 30, 2023 at 12:30:00 PM COVID-19, Global health This update provides new baseline risk estimates for hospital admission for non-severe COVID-19 patients. The revised estimates aid healthcare professionals in identifying and tailoring treatment for individuals based on their risk levels. The most notable change includes the transition of individuals over 65 and those with specific chronic conditions from high to moderate risk. WHO reiterates its strong endorsement of Nirmatrelvir-Ritonavir ('Paxlovid'). WHO recommends molnupiravir or remdesivir in cases where Nirmatrelvir-Ritonavir is unavailable for high-risk patients. Further, it advises against molnupiravir and remdesivir for moderate risk due to potential harms outweighing benefits. Only symptomatic treatment is recommended for low-risk patients. WHO cautions against routine use of new antivirals (VV116) and strongly opposes ivermectin for non-severe COVID-19, restricting its usage to clinical trials in severe or critical cases. Previous Next

USA tuberculosis report: The current updates (2016-2022) USA tuberculosis report: The current updates (2016-2022) Content Editor: Dr. Ghurumourthy June 29, 2024 Center for Disease Control and Prevention Tuberculosis, Infectious Disease, Report The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) uses the National TB Indicators Project (NTIP) to evaluate and enhance tuberculosis (TB) control efforts across the U.S. The NTIP employs specific metrics to assess TB control effectiveness, including TB incidence rates, which have decreased by 71.2% in 37 jurisdictions over the last five years. Another critical metric is the completion of TB therapy within 12 months, with 61.5% of jurisdictions meeting or exceeding the national average of 89.7%. Additionally, the project tracks the percentage of patients with reported drug susceptibility results , which is crucial for accurate treatment and stands at 97% nationally . The proportion of contacts to sputum AFB smear-positive TB patients who received a latent TB infection diagnosis and completed treatment has also improved across most jurisdictions. These metrics help measure the success of TB programs and identify areas needing improvement, such as the high TB incidence rate among non-U.S.-born individuals, which is 15.7% above the target. The project targets compact diagnostic tools for challenging bacterial strains and screening for new antibiotics. It aims to develop diagnostic platforms that will enable: Rapid detection of antibiotic-resistant bacteria Real-time identification of effective antibiotics Insights into resistance mechanisms. Furthermore, ARPA-H aims for user-friendly platforms to enhance antibiotic stewardship in healthcare. Previous Next
- Current status of the treatment cascade of hypertension in India
Current status of the treatment cascade of hypertension in India Current status of the treatment cascade of hypertension in India Content Editor: Dr. Prachi May 22, 2024 The Lancet Regional Health Southeast Asia Noncommunicable disease, Hypertension, NFHS The “treatment cascade” of hypertension is an important tool to understand and assess the performance of health systems in delivering health care to patients with hypertension. The various stages of the hypertension treatment cascade include The proportion of people screened for hypertension The proportion of people aware of their diagnosis The proportion of people on appropriate treatment The proportion of people with their blood pressure under control Data from the National Family Health Survey (NFHS)-5 survey of 1,267,786 people , which included males 15-54 years and females in the reproductive age group females was analyzed to identify the proportion of people at each stage of the treatment cascade. The national prevalence of hypertension was found to be 18.3% , among which men had a higher prevalence at 21.6% as compared to women at 14.8%. Though 70.5% of hypertensives had been screened at least once, only 34.3% were aware of their hypertensive status. The proportion of hypertensives under treatment was abnormally low at 13.7%, out of which only 7.8% had their BP under control. Multinomial logistic regression found males, illiterates, poor, never married, residents of rural areas, smokers/tobacco users, and alcoholic users were less likely to be at any level in the treatment cascade. Hence there is a need to make hypertension diagnosis and treatment more accessible , especially to the vulnerable groups. Click here to read more.
