World Asthma Day, celebrated since 1998 on the first Tuesday of May, is organized by the Global Initiative for Asthma and the World Health Organization.
This year, it was celebrated on May 7, with the theme "Asthma Education Empowers."
Asthma is a leading cause of premature deaths in low and middle-income countries.
For patients, education focuses on understanding asthma symptoms, proper medication use, reducing exposure, assessing asthma control, and managing worsening conditions.
The goal is to empower self-care, improve medication adherence, and reduce emergencies, healthcare costs, and absenteeism.
For healthcare workers, the focus is on gaining the necessary knowledge and skills for effective asthma diagnosis, management, and patient support.
