The 43rd Multi-Country Mpox Situation Report, issued by WHO on December 9, 2024, underscores that Mpox continues to pose a global public health emergency under the International Health Regulations (2005).
Despite worldwide efforts to control the virus, its spread has escalated, with outbreaks linked to multiple MPXV clades impacting Africa, the Americas, Europe, and the Asia-Pacific.
Since 2022, over 115,000 cases and 255 deaths have been reported across 126 countries.
Recent developments include Angola’s initial cases and travel-related infections identified in Canada and the United States.
The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) remains a focal point, with widespread clades Ia and Ib MPXV transmission, particularly affecting children and young adults.
WHO has prioritized enhanced emergency coordination, real-time surveillance, scalable healthcare solutions, and equitable vaccine distribution.
The response continues to evolve through updated vaccination plans, diagnostic advancements, and revised risk assessments, alongside efforts to promote education, reduce stigma, and protect communities.
