Recognizing the ocean's critical role as Earth's life support system and economic cornerstone, the UN emphasized its function as the planet's 50% oxygen producer, biodiversity hotspot, and vital protein source for over a billion people worldwide.
However, alarming statistics highlighted during the event, such as the depletion of 90% of big fish populations and the loss of 50% of coral reefs, underscored the dire need for conservation efforts.
The celebration brought together decision-makers, indigenous leaders, scientists, business executives, civil society, celebrities, and youth activists.
Their collective goal is to advocate for comprehensive measures beyond surface-level initiatives to safeguard ocean resources.
Organized by the UN's Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea, in partnership with Oceanic Global, the event underscored the global movement's ambition to inspire broad-based action for sustainable ocean management.
World Oceans Day 2024 raised awareness of human impacts on marine ecosystems and galvanized global citizens to unite to protect the oceans for future generations.
