The World Health Organization's latest report indicates that tuberculosis (TB) has overtaken COVID-19 as the leading cause of death from infectious diseases in 2023.
An estimated 8.2 million new TB cases were reported in 2023, the highest since WHO began global monitoring in 1995.
TB-related deaths decreased slightly from 1.32 million in 2022 to 1.25 million in 2023, yet the total number of people falling ill with TB rose to an estimated 10.8 million.
India, Indonesia, China, the Philippines, and Pakistan together accounted for 56% of the global TB burden, with India alone contributing 26%.
The report highlights significant underfunding in TB prevention and care, with only $5.7 billion of the $22 billion annual funding target available in 2023.
