• As a blow to the already marginalized LGBTQ+ community in Russia, President Vladamir Putin enacted a new legislation on 24th July 2023.

The Bill that banned medical interventions aimed at changing the sex of a person was passed in both the houses in the parliament and was imposed as a law by the President.

It also annuls all marriages of people with changed gender and takes away their rights to become parents, foster or adopted.

• As per claims by the government it aims to shield country’s “traditional values” and safeguard Russians from “Western anti-family ideology”.

• ‘Same sex marriages’ and ‘non-traditional sexual relations’ are also banned in Russia through various laws in the past.
