  • The study found that a total of 6.5 million topical antifungal prescriptions valued at $231 million were filled for Medicare Part D beneficiaries in 2021, almost half of which were written by high-volume prescribers.

  • The point of concern was the emergence and spread of antimicrobial-resistant superficial fungal infections like ringworm, which is caused by the overuse and misuse of topical antifungals, particularly antifungal-corticosteroid combination creams.

  • Following recommendations were given:

  1. The high volume of prescribers should be prioritized for antimicrobial stewardship efforts.

  2. confirmatory diagnostic testing by healthcare providers should be done.

  3. efforts to educate patients and make them aware of the correct use of topical antifungals, should be made
