Respectful Maternity Care, Maternal and Child Health

A community-based, mixed-method study to evaluate the quality of childbirth services and mistreatment by healthcare providers to mothers was carried out in Puducherry district.
Around 348 women were involved for quantitative phase and IDIs and KIIs were carried out to capture the perspectives of both the mothers and healthcare providers.
For obstetric care, 77.0% of women selected government tertiary healthcare facilities. Despite the fact that 69.0% and 75.6% of the participants, respectively, had not been subjected to verbal or physical abuse, the findings of the qualitative study were quite the reverse.
92.8% of the ladies reported that they were unable to have a birth partner present when they gave birth. 79.9% of the women did not have the option to select the mode they felt most comfortable giving birth in.
Mistreatment rates in rural areas were higher than in urban areas.
