The Supreme Court recently observed that 3000 metric tons of municipal solid waste is not being processed in Delhi daily and flagged concerns inter-alia about non-compliance with the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016.
The Supreme Court is deeply concerned about Delhi's inadequate waste processing, with only 8,000 out of 11,000 metric tons of daily waste being processed.
The court highlighted the environmental and public safety risks posed by untreated waste and warned against granting permissions for residential construction until the issue is resolved.
Efforts to address the problem are underway, with the Center and Delhi government directed to propose a plan for processing the remaining waste by May 13.
Vacancies in pollution control bodies nationwide were also noted, with efforts urged to fill these positions.
The Commission for Air Quality Management outlined various measures being taken to combat pollution in Delhi, including expanding public transport and increasing the number of electric buses and charging stations.
