The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) took a bold step in its fight against open dumping by raising the fine from Rs 180 to Rs 500.
As the city’s ranking dipped from fifth to ninth in the Swachh Survekshan ranking of Clean Cities 2022, the civic administration is working hard to keep the city clean.
Swachh Survekshan is an urban sanitation and cleanliness survey and has been held since 2016.
This fosters healthy competition among towns and cities for cleanliness.
Under the Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban) conducted by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), the annual survey promotes sustainable practices by citizens and Urban Local Bodies.
Concurrently, the PMC also recovered a fine of Rs 1.66 crore from 37,152 residents in 2023 for various reasons, including littering in public.
It also intensified its efforts by monitoring chronic spots that are littered.
