  • Vaccination is a proven strategy in preventing measles and during the period 2000-2023 it was estimated 60.3 million measles deaths were averted by vaccination. Even after commitment from all six WHO regions, no region has achieved and maintained the elimination successfully by the end of 2023.

  • It was estimated that MCV1(Measles containing vaccine) coverage decreased from 86% to 81% in 2021 during COVID-19 Pandemic and increased by 13% in 2022 with figures remaining unchanged in 2023.

  • During COVID-19 in 2019-2021 Coverage in all regions decreased. However, post COVID-19 it increased only in the American and European regions. As of 2023 the coverage was 64% in low-income countries, 86% in middle income countries and 94% in high income countries.

  • Incidence of measles was 583 per million in low-income countries while it was 37 and 26 per million in middle and high-income countries, respectively in 2023 as reported by CDC.
