  •  Preterm birth has led to more than 152 million vulnerable babies in the last decade.  

  • The survivors are likely to suffer disability and developmental delays. 

  • The place where a child is born also matters. 

  • LMICs manage only the survival of 1 out of 10 extremely preterm babies. High income countries manage the survival of 9 out of 10 such babies.  

  • Southern Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa constitute 65% of all preterm deaths worldwide. 

  • The web of causation includes Adolescent pregnancy, preeclampsia and Other humanitarian crisis- Air pollution, Covid 19 etc. 

  • Actions to improve care for women and newborns include:

  1. Increasing investments.

  2. Accelerated implementation.

  3. Integration across sectors.

  4.  Locally driven innovations.
