Preterm birth has led to more than 152 million vulnerable babies in the last decade.
The survivors are likely to suffer disability and developmental delays.
The place where a child is born also matters.
LMICs manage only the survival of 1 out of 10 extremely preterm babies. High income countries manage the survival of 9 out of 10 such babies.
Southern Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa constitute 65% of all preterm deaths worldwide.
The web of causation includes Adolescent pregnancy, preeclampsia and Other humanitarian crisis- Air pollution, Covid 19 etc.
Actions to improve care for women and newborns include:
Increasing investments.
Accelerated implementation.
Integration across sectors.
Locally driven innovations.
