Nigeria made history by being the first country to start using a new meningitis vaccine recommended by the World Health Organization called Men5CV.
This vaccine protects against five types of meningitis with one injection, compared to the old vaccine, which only protects against one type.
This rollout comes on the heels of a deadly meningitis outbreak in Nigeria, particularly in the northern states.
The development and introduction of this vaccine were collaborative efforts involving the WHO, Gavi, PATH, and other organizations.
This new vaccine has immense potential to significantly reduce meningitis cases and deaths, especially in Africa.
The rollout is a major step toward the worldwide goal of eliminating meningitis by 2030.
WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said, “This vaccine holds the potential to alter meningitis’s course, preventing outbreaks and saving lives. Nigeria’s rollout brings us closer to eliminating meningitis by 2030.”
