New guidelines have been issued by the World Health Organisation (WHO) on Insecticide-Treated Nets (ITNs) to combat malaria, as mosquitoes in many areas become resistant to pyrethroids.
The guidelines recommend two new classes of dual-ingredient ITNs with different modes of action: pyrethroid-chlorfenapyr nets and pyrethroid-pyriproxyfen nets.
WHO issued a strong recommendation for the deployment of pyrethroid-chlorfenapyr vs pyrethroid-only ITNs to prevent malaria in adults and children in areas where mosquitoes have become resistant to pyrethroids.
A conditional recommendation was made for the deployment of pyrethroid-chlorfenapyr ITNs instead of pyrethroid-PBO nets to prevent malaria in areas with pyrethroid resistance.
The recommendations are based on moderate certainty of evidence.
