Asthma, a chronic lung condition, can be managed through proper clinical care and self-management.
The New York State Department of Health analyzed asthma-related emergency department (ED) visits from 2016 to 2022 using Esri’s Emerging Hot Spot Analysis.
The study revealed urban areas like Buffalo, Rochester, and NYC had significant asthma hot spots, with ED rates decreasing during the pandemic compared to pre-pandemic levels.
While many persistent hot spots became sporadic, some areas in NYC, particularly in the Bronx and Manhattan, saw intensifying hot spots.
This method enhances traditional mapping by identifying emerging geographic patterns and can be used to evaluate the impact of local-level interventions for asthma and other chronic conditions.
