A cluster-randomized controlled trial in Chandigarh, India, aimed to reduce chronic disease risk factors in adolescents through a school-based health-promotion intervention was conducted.
Twelve public schools were randomized into intervention and control groups, involving eighth-std students (n = 453), parents (n = 395), and teachers (n = 94).
Using the Precede-Proceed Model, the intervention included classroom and physical activity sessions for adolescents, parents, and teachers separately.
Among adolescents, the intervention reduced salt intake and alcohol use, and increased fruit consumption and physical activity.
No significant effects were observed on sugar and vegetable intake or tobacco use.
Exploratory findings showed positive changes in parents' and teachers' behaviors, indicating the effectiveness of involving the broader school community in behavior-change interventions.
