The Har Ghar Jal initiative under the Jal Jeevan Mission, which PM Narendra Modi announced during his 2019 Independence Day address with a budget of ₹3.60 lakh crore, is predicted to miss its target to link all rural households to drinkable water by 2024.
The mission's goal is to install tap connections that deliver at least 55 L of drinking water per person daily.
By 2024, only 75% of households are expected to be covered, as the project gained momentum only in 2022 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, lack of personnel, state-specific issues, and even the Russia-Ukraine war.
Work has not even started in 1 crore households (5% of the total), and it is estimated that it will not be complete even by 2025-26 if the work is not highly efficient.
Only 58,357 of the 1,68,000 households with documented tap water availability have received certification under the scheme.
Har Ghar Jal certification is only complete in 3%, 1.5%, and 1.5% of villages in UP, Rajasthan, and West Bengal, respectively. Bihar and Telangana have no villages that have certified their connection status.
Only 8 States and UTs have stated that every village is completely linked; however, almost all of them had good connectivity in 2019 itself.
