Approximately 80% of public health institutions in India do not have enough staff, equipment, or infrastructure to meet basic requirements as per the (Indian Public Health Standards) IPHS guidelines.
The statistics were provided by the government's National Health Mission (NHM) self-assessment.
Out of more than two lakh establishments, only 40,451 took part in the evaluation.
Of the facilities tested (including district hospitals, community health centers, and health and wellness centers), about 20% met IPHS requirements, and 42% received a score below 50%.
The IPHS are the set benchmarks for delivering minimum essential healthcare services.
The Center hopes to have 70,000 facilities compliant within 100 days, and surprise inspections to verify claims will be carried out.
The officials have said that the National Quality Assurance Standards (NQAS) physical assessment is essential in assessing the quality of healthcare provided at hospitals and community health centers.
The NQAS team will soon provide a virtual assessment of health and wellness centers.
