September 2024 saw the highest global mpox cases since November 2022, totaling 2,763 confirmed cases, with significant increases in Africa and the Western Pacific.
Australia leads non-African nations in mpox cases, with outbreaks primarily affecting men who have sex with men, linked to clade IIb MPXV.
The Democratic Republic of the Congo is severely impacted, especially South Kivu province, with both clade Ia and clade Ib spreading within communities and households.
Recent mpox cases were reported in Zimbabwe, Kenya, and Côte d’Ivoire, with Kenya and Uganda each recording their first mpox-related deaths.
WHO emphasizes enhanced surveillance and community engagement to curb the mpox spread globally.
