  • GEPI was launched in 1988 to ensure that no child anywhere is paralyzed by any form of poliovirus.

  • To eradicate polio, the Global Polio Eradication Initiative tracks the status of the infection caused by the virus, every week.

  • For the initial weeks of January 2024, the summary of cases reported is as follows:

  1. Afghanistan: Seven wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1)-positive environmental samples

  2. Pakistan: Three WPV1-positive environmental samples

  3. Chad: One cVDPV2 case

  4. Côte d’Ivoire (West Africa): One cVDPV2 case and one positive environmental sample

  5. Democratic Republic of the Congo: Four cVDPV1 cases and one cVDPV2 case

  6. Mozambique: One cVDPV1 case

  7. Nigeria: Six cVDPV2 cases

  8. South Sudan: One cVDPV2 case

  9. Zimbabwe: Six cVDPV2-positive environmental samples
