GEPI was launched in 1988 to ensure that no child anywhere is paralyzed by any form of poliovirus.
To eradicate polio, the Global Polio Eradication Initiative tracks the status of the infection caused by the virus, every week.
For the initial weeks of January 2024, the summary of cases reported is as follows:
Afghanistan: Seven wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1)-positive environmental samples
Pakistan: Three WPV1-positive environmental samples
Chad: One cVDPV2 case
Côte d’Ivoire (West Africa): One cVDPV2 case and one positive environmental sample
Democratic Republic of the Congo: Four cVDPV1 cases and one cVDPV2 case
Mozambique: One cVDPV1 case
Nigeria: Six cVDPV2 cases
South Sudan: One cVDPV2 case
Zimbabwe: Six cVDPV2-positive environmental samples
