  • The global report "Progress Toward Achieving and Sustaining Maternal and Neonatal Tetanus Elimination—Worldwide, 2000–2022" confirms substantial advancements in maternal and neonatal tetanus (MNT) reduction worldwide.

  • Neonatal tetanus cases were claimed to have decreased by 89% between 2000 and 2021, with 47 out of 59 priority countries (80%) having achieved confirmed MNT eradication by December 2022.

  • The program's main objectives were to ensure clean delivery procedures, enhance competent birth attendance, and raise the percentage of pregnant women receiving the tetanus toxoid-containing vaccination (TTCV).

  • Notwithstanding these achievements, difficulties exist mainly because the COVID-19 epidemic has disrupted routine immunization.

  • In order to maintain success and prevent reemergence, national vaccination recovery efforts must incorporate MNT methods, given the upsurge in newborn tetanus cases in 31% of priority countries since 2020.
