The global report "Progress Toward Achieving and Sustaining Maternal and Neonatal Tetanus Elimination—Worldwide, 2000–2022" confirms substantial advancements in maternal and neonatal tetanus (MNT) reduction worldwide.
Neonatal tetanus cases were claimed to have decreased by 89% between 2000 and 2021, with 47 out of 59 priority countries (80%) having achieved confirmed MNT eradication by December 2022.
The program's main objectives were to ensure clean delivery procedures, enhance competent birth attendance, and raise the percentage of pregnant women receiving the tetanus toxoid-containing vaccination (TTCV).
Notwithstanding these achievements, difficulties exist mainly because the COVID-19 epidemic has disrupted routine immunization.
In order to maintain success and prevent reemergence, national vaccination recovery efforts must incorporate MNT methods, given the upsurge in newborn tetanus cases in 31% of priority countries since 2020.
