According to the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI), Afghanistan has reported increased instances of wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1), while three African countries have reported more cases of vaccine-derived polio.  Two WPV1 cases were recorded in Afghanistan's Nangarhar Province, which is the only area of the nation where polio is still endemic. Type 2 polioviruses generated from vaccines were discovered in the Central African Republic in 2 cases. One further incidence of the circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus type 1 (cVDPV1) was reported by the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Nigeria reported 2 more cases of cVDPV2  The organisation stated that although progress has been achieved, there are still a number of issues that need to be addressed, including how WPV1 traveled from Pakistan to Malawi and Mozambique, ongoing polio outbreaks in the DRC caused by vaccines, and immunisation gaps that developed during the COVID-19 pandemic.
