FAO, UNICEF, WFP and WHO confirmed famine in Gaza for the first time, urging an immediate ceasefire and unhindered humanitarian access. An Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) analysis released on 22 August 2025 estimates more than 500,000 people are already in famine, with conditions projected to spread from Gaza Governorate to Deir Al Balah and Khan Younis in the coming weeks. By end‑September, over 640,000 people are expected to face IPC Phase 5 (Catastrophic) food insecurity, with a further 1.14 million in Phase 4 (Emergency). The agencies warn that escalating hostilities will worsen acute malnutrition and mortality, particularly among sick and undernourished children, older people and persons with disabilities. They stress that only a ceasefire and large‑scale, safe access for humanitarian operations can avert additional preventable deaths and allow delivery of life‑saving assistance across Gaza.
