  • The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts below-normal rainfall in August 2023 due to a strengthening El Nino effect, which will suppress rainfall in the second half of the monsoon season.

  • Northwest India received record-breaking rainfall, but August is expected to be drier. After the first week of August, monsoon activity will shift to northeastern states, eastern India, and Himalayan foothill states. Temperatures will rise, with above-normal temperatures expected in the south peninsula, east, and northeast India, and some parts of northwest and central India.

  • IMD's June forecast for June-September rainfall was 4% below normal, but rainfall so far is 5% above usual.
