  • The CDC is creating awareness about Naloxone and its use by bystanders in drug overdoses.

  • As per them, in nearly 40% of overdose deaths in 2019, there was someone around who could have saved a life.

  • They are disseminating messages for the same on their social media.

  • Naloxone is a medication approved by the FDA that is designed to rapidly reverse opioid toxicity.

  • Examples of Opioids include Heroin, fentanyl, oxycodone, codeine, hydrocodone, and morphine.

  • There are two FDA-approved formulations of naloxone

  1. Nasal sprays (which are prefilled devices)

  2. Injectable (I/M and I/V)

  • It’s administered to someone after an overdose has occurred, so it needs assistance because the individual who overdoses is likely unconscious.

  • It has no effect on someone who doesn’t have opioids in their system, which means it’s not a treatment for opioid use disorder.
