  • Amid Row, Data Protection Bill Tabled: A long-awaited Digital Personal Data Protection Bill, 2023 in Lok Sabha, aiming to safeguard individual data from companies' misuse. 

  • Fines up to ₹250 crore for data breaches and the establishment of a Data Protection Board of India have been proposed. However, concerns arise as government entities are exempted from the rules, leading to fears of a "surveillance state." 

  • The opposition has demanded a thorough examination of the bill by the Parliamentary Committee.

  • Civil rights groups have voiced apprehensions over potential government access to private data, due to which controversy has sprung up over a perceived bias, as non-governmental organizations have been proposed to be subjected to it while the government remains exempted.
