WHO’s latest Disease Outbreak News warns that cholera remains a multi‑country emergency with very high risk of further spread. Between 1 January and 17 August 2025, 409,222 cholera or acute watery diarrhoea cases and 4,738 deaths were reported from 31 countries. The Eastern Mediterranean and African Regions carry the heaviest burden. Country snapshots illustrate the scale: the Democratic Republic of the Congo reported 46,800 cases and 1,362 deaths; South Sudan 71,825 suspected cases and 1,194 deaths as of mid‑August; and the Republic of the Congo 457 suspected cases with a case‑fatality rate of 7.7%. Key drivers include conflict, displacement, flooding and weak WASH infrastructure. WHO urges intensified surveillance, rapid case management, oral cholera vaccine campaigns, and cross‑border coordination. A continental preparedness plan for Africa was launched on 26 August alongside a joint Incident Management Team. (Source: WHO)
