The World Health Organization African Regional Office (WHO AFRO) is transitioning from Epi Info to District Health Information Software 2 (DHIS2) to enhance vaccine-preventable disease surveillance.
This move started in 2019 and involves a phased implementation across African countries, with pilot programs in Mali, Rwanda, and Togo.
By 2024, eight of the 47 member countries had fully implemented the system, integrating their data into a regional platform.
This transition to DHIS2 is not without its challenges, but it promises to significantly improve data quality and system interoperability, thereby enhancing outbreak detection and response.
