  • Supreme Court has instructed states to implement the guidelines drafted by the center to prevent "unnecessary hysterectomies”.

  • This change was made in reply to the public interest litigation (PIL) petition filed in the Supreme Court in 2013, which stated that in Bihar, Chhattisgarh, and Rajasthan unnecessary hysterectomies were conducted in the ambit of Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojana and other health schemes.

  • The petition further stated that most of these women operated upon were poor, less educated, and belonged to SC, ST & OBC.

  • Further, it claimed that healthcare institutions were misusing the procedure to claim insurance.

  • In response, the health ministry has instructed compulsory audits for all hysterectomies in all private and public institutions.
